The solution was the employment of small mobile forces that ranged or patrolled the frontier. In chapter 1 of this book, we have attempted to present a brief history of those units which performed Ranger missions, even if they were not called Rangers. Ranger missions are special light infantry military operations such as strike opera tions, usually deep penetration, including raids, interdictions, and recovery.
