In den WarenkorbFirst Edition. [French Literature] FIRST FREWER EDITION. Octavo (19 x 15cm), pp.[2] viii; 262 [4]. With 49 engraved plates by Benett, including a frontispiece. Publisher's light blue cloth with gilt titles and black decoration to spine and upper. Some heavy creasing and a couple of small tears to fly-leaf and first blank. Lightly toned throughout; a distinct tobacco scent. Heavy toning to spine and board margins. Very good. Something of a farce, in which a wealthy Chinese man tries to have himself killed to trigger a life insurance policy after being informed that he has lost his fortune, only to discover later that he has not lost everything. First translated into English in the US in 1879. Although this edition is made up from sheets printed in London with a title page dated 1881, it was actually published just before the London edition in October 1880, since Sampson Low had decided to save its own publication for the Christmas gift market in November. It is therefore neither the first edition in English, nor the first UK edition, but it is the first edition of this particular translation.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. This thrillingly recounted journey, of which this is the first US edition, is in two volumes. The brown waxed cloth covers of both volumes are, for their age, are still vivid. The gold print is bright, the pressed illustrations are unworn and evocative. The covers of both volumes have general wear and marking from use and storage. Volume II is the more marked of the two with storage spotting marks. The corners and edges are worn but not significantly so. The back covers are principally storage rubbed. The spines of both volumes are worn at the head and foot. The head of the spines have wear from pulling. Both have handling wear - but the printing is clear and strong. The bindings are muscular and strong. The frontispage of volume 1 is unmarked. That of volume 2 has damp staining. The end papers of both volumes have shallow cracks in the spine seams through to the binding stitching. In volume 2 there is a small half-circle open tear to the bottom end page towards the spine edge. The front pages of volume 1 are in very good condition. In volume 2 has a long crack along the spine seam. The frontis illustration page is loosened at the foot. The thin protective page has earned its keep and the condition thereon is good. In volume one the map is torn but complete. Volume 2 is the more handled of the two and has handling marking throughout. However, this adventurous, breathlessly boys-own like story is in very good condition. All pages and illustration plates are complete, intact and firmly attached to the bindings. The illustrations are courageous in their description and are a delight. The text in both volumes is clear, very readable and clean. fk.
