Charlemagne ou La Caroléide by Charles-Victor Prévot, vicomte d'Arlincourt, was the first published work of d'Arlincourt, but it failed to gain him the celebrity he craved. He followed up with Le Solitaire (1821), his most notable work, and three subsequent novels: Le Renégat (1822), Ipsiboé (1823), and L'Étrangère in 1825. The volume commences with three full-page pencil sketches and then begins the manuscripts of verses, epigrams, etc. The first part of the volume contains several verses that are addressed to Madame Sophie Arnould, the famous actress and operatic singer. The latter portion appears to be a slightly later hand. Some pieces are dated including a piece entitled "A Ma Mére le 1er Janvier 1811" signed N. V. A. Loiseau which faced a page entitled "Envoi" which is addressed "A Mlle. Loiseau à l'age de 16 ans par Mr. S. Gautier." The verses pertain to many subjects, one a "Vers pour l Portrait de l'Empereur," another"Air le vin de Bourgogne " and there is a piece at the back of the volume relating to Waterloo. An excellent collection providing a very interesting view of the France of this time. Contemporary sheep, gilt spine. Rubbed, several leaves excised, else a very good copy. Signed.…

manuscript in ink on paper, one leaf, the verso of which is p. 48 with apparently a cancel pasted on, this leaf a little defective in the margin (no loss), minor soiling, ink splashes, &c, pp. 226, [8, Index], 8vo, contemporary cat's paw calf, spine gilt in compartments, slightly worn. Although both the title-page and the spine proclaim this Tom. I, the volume, with its own index, is complete in itself. It is written in a single neat hand, with some crossings out and minor emendations, the Index in the same hand bit on slightly smaller paper (inserted at end). A seemingly later hand has also been through the volume, making a few corrections. A fascinating collection of pre-Revolutionary French popular songs, with, in most instances, a note of the air to which they should be sung. The airs are popular too, but at least once, a tune strays in from art music, namely an unspecified one from the 12-year-old Mozart's Bastien et Bastienne. There are amourous songs, some bawdy, drinking songs, sentimental songs, remembrances of youth.…

manuscript in ink on paper, 117 pages including continuation onto rear paste-down, 12mo, 1½ pp. music, a little browning, and a little staining, mainly ink splashes, contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments, top 2 compartments of spine defective, and the third flapping, corners worn, boards held on by a few threads. An interesting, and somewhat informal, collections of songs, mainly amatory, in a single, fairly neat and legible, hand. In many instance the appropriate air is identified, in one case written out in musical notation. Some of the subjects are unusual. One, a Romance, descants upon the joys of the Mohammedan Paradise. Another, 'Complainte d'un mouche qui mourut pour avoir piqué le sein d'une jolie Dame' is attributed to Cardinal de Bernis. There is also 'Le Philosophe déabusé', while another Chanson nouvelle derides the astronomers 'Buffon, Lacaille et D'Alembert', since true beauties are found here on earth (in female form). Diversion is found with 'L'heureux jardinier de Versailles.'. …
