In den Warenkorb8vo (110 x 177 mm). 3 pp. on bifolium. Card: 104 x 63 mm. Discussing a series of articles on the use of the bicycle in war. Driant makes arrangements with a journalist at Le Figaro to publish this under the pseudonym "Marcellus" instead of his literary pseudonym "Capitaine Danrit", in order to avoid potential difficulties with t…he Ministry of War. He states that in 1888, his publication of "La Guerre de demain", a novel about a future French war with Germany, had already caused official disquiet and raised the prospect of arrest. Driant was the son-in-law of Général Boulanger, a prominent revanchiste, whose runaway popularity had threatened to destabilise the Third Republic in 1888-89. The articles duly appeared in Le Figaro, under the agreed pseudonym of Marcellus, in September 1896. - The card asks the recipient "tentez de donner satisfaction au pauvre Abbé Laneuve, la crème des hommes" and is signed Driant, dated 24, 6h10, without month or year. On it is printed Driant's name, "Saint-Cyr" and "Capitaine Instructeur", a rank he held at L'École spéciale militaire de Saint-Cyr from 1893. - In addition to his military career, Driant was a prolific author of novels about future wars in which France faced enemies from all sides. He retired from military service in 1905 to enter politics and was elected to the Chambre des Députés. On the outbreak of World War I, he saw the long-desired opportunity for revenge on Germany and returned to the Army, dying at Verdun on 22 February 1916. An example of the challenges of interaction between the press and the military, at a time when European armed forces were developing new technologies and methods. - Light browning in accordance with age, a small amount of minor foxing/staining, letter with a light central crease from folding. Overall crisp and clean, writing elegant and legible.

In den WarenkorbAn interesting letter, casting light on bibliographic and book trade practices in Consulate Paris. 2pp, 12mo. Forty-two lines of closely-written text on the first leaf of a bifolium, the recto of the second leaf being addressed 'Au Citoyen Firmin Didot | Rue du Regard | A Paris'. In good condition, lightly aged, with white paper… stub of mount adhering to second leaf. 'L'Aristote' is written in the left-hand margin of the first page, and he begins by giving the results of the collation of the various editions of du Val's Aristotle, finding that 'l'edition de 1619 et celle de 1629 sont la meme et la plus belle; et que celle de 1639 inferieure pour l'execution est la Seule qui contienne les dernieres additions de du Val dont je suis curieux'. He notes the printers of the three editions. In the light of his discoveries, he discusses the purchases of the 1639 edition from 'la personne que vous charges de ces commission', asking him 'de vouloir bien recompenser pour moi cet agent, car voila bien des peines que je luie donne et bien des emplettes difficiles et [?] qu'il fait pour moi et si bon marche qu'il est impossible qu'il y ait le moindre benefice, ce qu n'est pas juste'. A long postscript concerns 'notre bon ami Cabani' and his 'pauvre camarade [Heimebart?]' In a second postscript he states that he has had to abandon his intention of calling on Didot for 'l'exemplaire en question' as he is 'un peu souffrant'.

The term "eonism" denoting the tendency to adopt the costume and manners of the opposite sex, is derived from his name. Despite d'Éon's wearing a dragoon's uniform all the time, there were rumors that he was actually a woman, and a betting pool was started on the London Stock Exchange about his true sex. D'Éon finally claimed to be physically not a man, but a woman, and demanded recognition by the government as such. King Louis XVI and his court complied, but demanded that d'Éon dress appropriately and wear women's clothing. D'Éon agreed, especially when the king granted him funds for a new wardrobe. Overall, Charles d'Éon spent his first 49 years as a man, and his last 33 years as a woman. Upon death, a council of physicians discovered that d'Éon's body was anatomically male.
