In den Warenkorb2 volumes. Two very rare issues of an administrative annual periodical (in the form of an almanac) on Tahiti, Moorea and other parts of French Polynesia, printed in Papeete (the capital of French Polynesia and Tahiti). In 1842 the French proclaimed the protectorate over the islands and atolls in the different archipelagos of French Polynesia, including Tahiti, which is the most populous island. Both issues contain a calendar, in addition to the many pages listing various members of the local and colonial government and judiciary. Both issues also contain demographic information about the population and trade, including lists showing who has a patent on what, tables on the import and export in the port of Papeete, but also tables showing the different rates for posting letters from Polynesia through the colonial mail service. Besides this administrative information, the yearbooks also contain geographical information on the Society Islands (both the Windward Islands (or Îles du Vent), including Tahiti and Moorea, and the Leeward Islands (or Îles Sous le Vent), among others Bora-Bora and Raiatea), the Marquesas Islands and the archipelago of Tuamotu, besides some small remarks on others places in Oceania. With the blind-tooled stamp of Carlos Bailly-Balliere (C. Bailly Balliere, Libreria Estranjera y Nacional, Madrid") on both title pages, with some contemporary labels mounted on the front wrapper and spine (reading "E" and "1"; "C" and "3"). Wrappers are a little worn, some soiling on the back wrapper of the 1863 issue, a light crease in the front wrapper of the 1863 issue, book blocks cracked and therefore some leaves are a little or almost loose. The 1863 issue is slightly foxed, also on the leaves on which the photographs are mounted, but not affecting the maps. Otherwise in good condition. Both annuals are very rare and seldomly offered for sale.l O'Reilly & Reitman 10283 & 10284. Original publisher's printed wrappers. With two original photographs in the 1863 edition, both reproducing maps, one showing the islands Tahiti and Moorea and the other showing archipels which were then under French protectorate. Pages: VIII, 372; [4], LX, 126, [2 blank] pp. With: (2) [IDEM]. Annuaire des établissements français de l'Océanie et du Protectorat des Iles de la Société et dépendances pour l'an 1864 (title on the front wrapper: Annuaire de Taïti pour 1864).Papeete, Imprimerie du Gouvernement, October 1864.

In den WarenkorbPen and ink on wove paper, laid down. Measuring 465 by 385mm. Numerous insect holes (consistent with its tropical origin) and points where the iron gall ink has burned through the paper. Slight losses to left hand margin, barely affecting image. Calligraphic penmanship decorated with an elaborate border of flowers, and two baying hounds rendered in pen flourishes. [Aukena Island, Born into a French noble family, Comte Alphonse de Florit de la Tour de Clamouze (1784-1868) joined the Roman Catholic church as a lay brother, and took the name Urbain. In 1835 he participated in a mission organised by the Congregation of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary to the Gambier Islands in French Polynesia. There he established and headed the Re'e Seminary College on Aukena Island, where Mangarevan boys were educated in Latin and French and the ways of the Catholic church, in order that they might too become clergymen. This school, also known as the College of Anaotiki, was the first such institution of higher learning in the South Pacific. Students included the young King Joseph Gregorio II, the last king or 'Akariki of the island of Mangareva, and other Gambier Islands. Florit de la Tour remained in the Gambier Islands for almost thirty years, returning to France in 1863 just five years before his death. This penmanship sampler may well have been produced by one of his Native students, and serves also as a decorative advertisement or keepsake of the school itself. Such elaborate penmanship would have been a feature of Florit de la Tour's own noble education, and would likely have been supported by popular engraved French writing manuals of the day, like those by Bégat, Gariel Laurent, Dartiguenave and Pierre Picquet. Despite the richly biodiverse forests which covered many of the islands, the plants depicted on the sampler are distinctly European, including roses and narcissus. This suggests that they, and the hounds, are drawn directly from a specific manual. Such manuscript produced in Polynesian mission schools is understandably scarce. We have seen no other examples of its kind. Provenance: sold at Phillips in June 1969.

Very good. Manuscript map. Minor spotting. Size 7.5 x 7.5 Inches. This is an beautifully detailed 1835 manuscript map or nautical chart depicting the Gambier or Mangareva Islands in French Polynesia. Although identified by names given to the islands at the time, the map is centered on Mangareva (labeled Pearl Island), and includes other notable islands of the group. Beautifully detailed coastal features and numerous depth soundings are noted throughout. Frederick William Beechey was a British naval officer, explorer, artist and hydrographer who was tasked to explore the Bering Strait in 1825 and attempt to make contact with either the overland expedition of Franklin from the Mackenzie River or the naval expedition from Prince Regent Inlet under Parry. While he was unable to rendezvous with either Franklin or Parry, his three year long voyage led him to discover several islands in the Pacific. He published an account of this expedition in the Narrative of a voyage to the Pacific and Beering's Strait . This map is based on the surveys of Captain Beechey in 1826 and first appeared in his Narrative .

Excellent. Original outline color. Size 18.5 x 22 Inches. This is the 1827 Vandermaelen map of the Society Islands, Tahiti, and French Polynesia. It summarizes the European discoveries leading up to, including, and following Captain Cook. It is the first lithographic map of these islands. It is here accompanied by an extensive French text describing the region and its recent history: the arrival of European missionaries, for example, the rise of the Põmara kingdom, and its change to constitutional monarchy. The region was still being actively explored in the 1820s, and this is reflected on the map. Many Rediscoveries The nature of trans-Pacific voyages during the age of discovery was such that islands found during one voyage would often go unconfirmed for more than a century. For example, a French Polynesian atoll here is marked according to the several European encounters, and the respective names applied to it. Le Maire and Schouten's 1616 visit is noted, with their name Vlieghen Eiland translated to the French I. Aux Mouches (Island of Flies). The map records John Byron's visit during his 1765 circumnavigation, during which he named the atoll after the Prince of Wales. A 1791 date notes the name change to Dean's Island. The indigenous name for this atoll, not noted on the map, is Rangiroa. Publication History and Census This map appeared in the sixth part, 'Océanique,' of Vandermaelen's Atlas universel de géographie physique, politique, statistique et minéralogique . The atlas was produced in one edition in 1827; only 810 complete sets were sold. The full set of six volumes appears in eleven institutional collections in OCLC, and the 6th volume alone is listed in 10, but the map is not independently cataloged. References: OCLC 949815370. Very good. Diazoprint. Light wear along original fold lines. Verso repairs to fold separations. Size 31.25 x 42.75 Inches. Tahiti has captured people's imaginations since the 18th century when Captain James Cook returned from his first voyage to the Pacific with a map of the islands and descriptions of it as an earthly paradise. This c. 1965 Service du Tourisme de Tahiti pictorial tourist map of Tahiti must have helped continue the fascination with the island. Today, Tahiti remains a popular tourist destination. A Closer Look The map focuses on Tahiti, the largest island in the Windward Group of the Society Islands, French Polynesia. Fifty-four locations are numerically identified, including hotels, restaurants, beaches, clubs, museums, rivers, and valleys. Faa'a International Airport, which opened in 1960, making visiting the island much easier, is situated along the island's northern coast. Mountain peaks, rivers, and cities and towns are among the locations labeled. Bays, points, channels, islands, banks, and other coastal features are also identified. An inset map of Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia, occupies part of the upper right. Charming Tahitian cultural vignettes further decorate the piece. Publication History and Census This map was created and published by the Service du Tourisme de Tahiti c. 1965. This is the only known surviving example. We dated this piece based on the earliest appearance of the Vieux Montmartre Restaurant we were able to find, which was from 1965.
