This book is one of the best first-hand accounts of Napoleon's Leipzig campaign demonstrating how he lived and worked in the field. The author was a Lieutenant Colonel of Calvary in Napoleon's staff. Spine is rubbed with loss of leather at head of spine, gilt faded, boards soiled & worn, wear along all edges, corners bumped with wear, some foxing on verso of map with only some very light staining on map itself (in very good condition), a page between the end of the Author's Preface and the page marked "Part The First " appears to have been removed but it could also be the way the book was bound, interior pages clean with the exception of a few small random stains. This Spanton translation was the second in English, preceded by the Martel translation of 1854 & 1855, De la Loi du Contraste simultané des Couleurs (1839). "one of the most influential treatises on colour written during the nineteenth century.The neo-impressionist painters derived their methods of painting from Chevreul's principles. They found the scientific basis for the division of tones in Chevreul's principles of simultaneous contrast." - DSB. A delightful interlude on the principles of color applied to effects of hats and skin tone. Chevreul, a chemist, was named director of the dye works in Paris. He received many complaints about the dyes being used there. In particular, the blacks appeared different when used next to blues. He determined that the yarn's perceived color was influenced by other surrounding yarns. This led to a concept known as simultaneous contrast which he explored and elaborated in this seminal tome. Chevreul is also linked to what is sometimes called Chevreul's illusion, the bright edges that seem to exist between adjacent strips of identical colors having different intensities.Chevreul's work addressed painting with the aim of reproducing nature as closely as possible, by separating effects of light and chiaroscuro, which the artist must repeat, from those of color contrast, which would apply to the paint's own color and so be exaggerated. His colour principles had a great influence on advanced art in Europe, particularly Impressionism, Neo-Impressionism and Orphism.

Second edition hard back binding recently rebound in quarter tawny brown leather, the spine divided into seven panels, dark green lettered label to the second, decorated with gilt fillets, marble paper sides, untrimmed page edges, new end sheets. Folio. 16½'' x 10½''. Contains red and black printed title, blank, (xxviii), 331 pp…. 22 vignettes engraved in intaglio and 5 vignettes engraved on wood in the text. Second edition of John Henley's English translation of the Diarium italicum by the famous French Benedictine Bernard de Montfaucon, published in Latin in 1702. This edition is augmented by corrections communicated to Henley by Montfaucon himself. The introductory material includes extracts from the correspondence between Montfaucon and Henley regarding this work. The Diarium italicum was never translated into French. This is the account of his archaeological journey through Italy, with erudite descriptions of the curiosities he was able to observe. Pages 296-293 mis-placed after page 292. Dusty closed page edges, the text block without any foxing or age toning to the paper. The letter is 1p, 12mo, and is accompanied by the covering 8vo leaf, addressed to 'John Atkins Esqre | Duke Street | Westminster', with a second signature for franking. The covering leaf is endorsed: 'Admiralty August 21 1806 | Adml. Markham concerning Miles Burn that it would be impossible to get him reinstated'. Both letter an…d covering leaf in good condition, lightly aged and worn, with fold lines. Markham could hardly be more decisive. The letter reads: 'My Dr Sir | Your attempts I am sure will be in vain to get Mr Burn restored to his rank[.] The Evidence is very strong indeed as to his general [last word underlined] drunken habits, and the instances, render him for ever incapable [last three words underlined] of serving His Majesty his heirs or Successors'. At the foot of the page, apparently written at a later date: 'I wrote on a scrap of paper written on the other side which I did not see when I wrote this'.

The two items are in very good condition, on lightly aged paper. Item One: Secretarial Letter, in French, by 'C Vaublanc', Vincent-Marie Viénot, Count of Vaublanc (1756-1845), 'Le Ministre Secretaire d'Etat de L'Intérieur' [French Minister of the Interior]. Paris, 13 April 1816. He is sending the 'fac simile De la Lettre de notr…e Infortunée Reine', and in order to dispel any doubts as to authenticity has initialled the foot of the third page. Item Two: Facsimile engraving by Pierre Picquet of Queen Marie-Antoinette celebrated letter to her sister, written on the day of her execution, and dated 'ce 16 8bre. [1793] a 4h ½ du matin'. 3pp., 4to. Bifolium. At foot of third page: 'Gravé par Pre. Picquet. [Engraved by Pierre Picquet.], with Vaublanc's initials 'C. V' in bottom right-hand corner. From the papers of the Pittite Member of Parliament John Blackburne, which also include material relating to the Flight to Varennes.
