In December 1942 Fidelity, with T Company, 40 Commando aboard, joined Convoy ON 154. The convoy was attacked by U-boats from 27 December while north of the Azores. On 29 December Fidelity, suffering from engine problems,…fell out of the convoy. She launched her aircraft as an anti-submarine patrol while repairs took place. During this time her aircraft reported lifeboats to the southwest and her landing craft was sent to pick them up. These were 44 men from Empire Shackleton, the convoy commodore's ship. During the night Fidelity was making 5 knots towards the Azores, but came under attack twice. She was fired on by U-225, and later by U-615. Both U-boats were driven off when Fidelity fired back. On 30 December she was found by U-435, under the command of Siegfried Strelow and was torpedoed twice. Strelow observed the sinking, and estimated about 300 survivors in the water, but when he made his report later he was asked "whether their destruction in the prevailing weather can be counted on". This was some months after BdU's infamous Laconia Order, instructing U-boat commanders not to assist survivors in any way, and regarded at the Nuremberg trials as a tacit encouragement to ensure there were none. At the time of her sinking Fidelity had on board some 369 souls. All were lost. Contains 128 pp with monochrome archive photographs and some maps throughout. In den WarenkorbBligh's entry in the Oxford DNB does not note his service on HMS Wasp, to which he was appointed in October 1774. According to one authority the ship 'saw service out of Passage, County Cork, Ireland from [November 1774]. In October 1775 [Bligh] brought sixty volunteers from Ireland into Plymouth, and in June 1776 sailed from Po…rtsmouth to Plymouth with money for the dockyard artificers. Towards the end of August, the Wasp arrived off the Devonshire port with ten transports bound for North America, and she then sailed for Ireland.' Built in 1749, the 8-gun sloop the Wasp was sold off by the Royal Navy in 1781. In 1784, under the name Mentor, she was a slave ship. Good bold signature on letter of 1p, 4to. In fair condition, on aged and discoloured paper, with wear to corners and closed tear along the two postage folds. Addressed to 'The Honourable The Principal Officers & Commissrs. of His Majesty'[s] Na[vy]' (parts of last two word chipped away). Docketed '1: Decembr. 1775. / Wasp / Captn: Bligh / Book sent' and 'Recd. the above Muster Book / TM / 12 Decr. 1775'. The letter reads: 'Gentlemen, / Yesterday I Lodged at the Clerk of the Checks Office at this Port, to be forwarded to your Board, One Monthly Book for September & October 1775 for His Majesty's Sloop the Wasp under my Command, which please to Acknowledge the receipt off to Waterford in Ireland, as I shall sail for that place in a day or two. I am, with great respect, / Gentlemen, / Your most Obedient / Humble Servant R R Bligh'.

In den WarenkorbAt the time of writing, Berkeley's newly-constructed HMS Emerald had just completed her coppering and fitting-out at Woolwich. Sailing to join Jervis's Mediterranean fleet, within less than a year she would be involved in controversy. Following the Battle of Cape St Vincent (14 February 1797), in which HMS Emerald was too lightl…y built to take part, the victorious Jervis sent Berkeley off with a squadron of five ships in search of the disabled Spanish flagship, Santisima Trinidad. On 20 February Berkeley declined to engage when he sighted her under tow. This decision was widely criticised, and there were calls for Berkeley's court-martial. Two months later, on 26 April 1797, HMS Emerald was cruising with the Irresistible off the Spanish coast, when they captured two enemy frigates, one of which sank at sea. 1p, folio. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper with slight chipping to corners and edges. Addressed to 'Principal Officers & Commrs. of HMs. Navy'. Reads: 'Gentlemen / His Majesty's Ship under my Command having arrived here this day, I have to request you will cause the necessary Steps to be taken for the Payment of the Company of His Majesty's Ship Juno, (who have been turned over to serve in the Emerald) as soon as possible, as I am in hourly Expectation of receiving Orders to proceed to Sea - / I am / Gentlemen / Your humble Servt / J. Cornewall Berkeley'. Docketed on reverse: '12 Decr. 95 / Captn Berkeley / Emerald / desires he may be paid'. Also on reverse: 'Will the Board please to Order the Juno's Pay Books which were paid in Tower, to be forwarded to Shearness. [sic] / P. H. / 14 Decembr.' and the following, with the initials of three commissioners, 'Let the Books be sent accordingly / CH [Captain Charles Hope, Deputy Comptroller of the Navy, 1795-1801?] JH [John Henslow (1730-1815), Surveyor to the Navy, 1784-1806?] GM [?] / Acq[uaint] Captn'.

Text: He starts by c…ongratulating his brother on his wedding, admitting that sailors are "bad hands at Complements" but expresses pleasure at contact from his sister. He then goes into his activities in Smyrna: We have been paying our respects to the Captain Pacha, the great man in this Empire & brother of the Grand Seignior [sic] his power is unlimited all [?] jurisdiction ceasing on his arrival. [H]e came on board us twice & we got under weigh he expressed himself much pleased with the Ship & look a great deal of [?] alterations made in his own Ship (from ours he smoaked out of a Golden pipe set in diamonds. [H]is ring was a diamond about the size of [O -large ring/nought drawn] not less from its brightness some of the officers concluded it worth 7 or 8 thousand Pounds, the first dress[?] I saw him in was blue velvet set full of various stones his turban a Camels hair [Shall?] the last magnificent part about him[.] His next dress a rich blue velvet covered with diamonds of great value o0o & pearls about the same size again in a yellow satin full of various sized diamonds, I never saw such a Collection of riches in my life[.] I suppose he carried on his [back?] Pistols ring & sabre from 50 to 100 Thousand pounds each time - which I do not expect you to believe till you have seen the Nillions of oppressed wretches who furnish them - if you should in this Country get worth 10000 your head is gone & the Grand Signior or his Officers your heir.' The Pacha has given 'other Ships from 1500 Piastres he presented the Officers with Turkish stuffs my present is a piece of Blue Silk worked with Gold & all the Officers nearly the same. he presented Capt Hood [later Vice-Admiral Sir Samuel Hood (1762-1814)] with a Gold Box set with diamonds a quantity of muslins & various rich things we are not judges of diamonds but all agree the Captain to be worth near a thousand pounds'. The Pacha '[see Note C.] wished to make a Second present to all the Offiers & Crew but the Capt. very properly would not allow it - He is gone with his Fleet to collect the tribute of the Empire.' Notes: A. HMS Aigle "When Captain Hood transferred from the Juno to the bigger frigate HMS Aigle (38 guns) in March 1794 he took with him a contingent of officers and men that included Midshipman Thorp. Corsica: Between April and August 1795, Aigle took part in the blockade of Corsica and the capture of Calvi. Smyrna: Aigle spent six months from May to October 1795 blockading French warships in the Turkish port of Smyrna (now Izmir) a very unpopular operation because of its lack of opportunity for prizes and its unhealthy climate, with frequent outbreaks of the plague; B. "Letters to his family Thorp wrote numerous letters to his parents and siblings throughout his career, except for his time on Thisbe in Nova Scotia during his first year of service and his subsequent time on Magnificent. These were deposited in the National Maritime Museum in 1968 in the form of two letterbooks. Regrettably, no record of persons inspecting these letterbooks seems to have been kept by the National Maritime Museum but anyone studying them in detail who is familiar with the AubreyMaturin series of novels of Patrick O'Brian may find a remarkable coincidence between some of the descriptions in Thorp's letters and events or characters in O'Brian's novels, inviting speculation whether O'Brian may have read the letters and been inspired by their content. Thorp's letters describing the escape from Toulon, the attack on the Mortella Tower and the siege of Saint-Florent, the blockade of Corsica, the capture of Calvi and the cutting out of the Principe Fernando are particularly noteworthy.
