French" as colonel, to a senator, inquiring why his promotion to brigadier general has been held up and mentioning General Grant, in part: "I have my appointment of Bvt. Brigadier here in possession why it was withheld at the War Office and by whom and what for? I will not hazard to say. On a communication forwarded through Gen. Halleck to General Grant, General H. made the following endorsement: '.I fully concur in the statements of Colonel French and I think his services most eminently merit additional promotion.'" Slight discoloration along a vertical crease; very good(-) condition. Union major general; aide-de-camp to General Franklin Pierce in the Mexican War; hero of Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville campaigns in the Civil War.
