Solid but worn copy with overall rubbing, chips to spine ends, chip to lower rear corner, good hinges, sound text block, blank page at front removed, pages age-toned but readily legible, occasional finger smudges to margins, name stamp on front free endpaper, no other markings. Two frontispiece portraits, one of Fremont and one of Col. J.J. Albert and two additional plates. 456 pp. A later printing of this edition (Howes F370 which lists editions through 1847), map not called for in this edition. There is a new preface and the aforementioned Advertisment to the New Ediiton as well as new material on the Califonia Gold Rush region. Very good, bit of shallow wear head of spine; there is a tear to page 203/204 with slight loss of text.

(wst) Reprint of Fremont's Reports of his U.S. Army. exploring expeditions of 1842 and 1843/44 through the American West. The Reports are directed to Col. J.J.Albert, Chief of the Corps. of Topographical Engineers (the frontis portraits are of Fremont & Col. Albert). This "new edition" was timed to coincide with the great California Gold Rush and to encourage the "forty-niners" with added articles on the gold regions of California including Colonel Mason's "Official Report", routes to and physical geography of California. "In Upper California - may be found the modern Canaan, a land 'flowing with milk and honey,' its mountains studded and its rivers lined and choked, with gold!".

Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. Hardcover. Blue cloth over boards with leather spine. Gold lettering on brown title plate on spine. Title page dated 1846, no separate copyright page. 186 pages. In fair condition. Considerable rubbing to cloth and spine, with corners of boards exposed through split cloth. Leather is cracked along the entire length of both hinges and horizontally towards head of spine. Leather is very worn, though lettering on title plate remains bright and clear. Textblock remains firmly bound. Prominent foxing on all pages of textblock. Lower right corner of first half of pages have stain from water damage. Additional water damage on front endpaper, which is also split along the gutter. Personal library book plate on flyleaf before title page, this page is no longer attached to binding. Name written in fading ink along top edge of title page. A couple pages creased in the corner as if they had been dog-eared at one point. Print remains bold and crisp- in good reading condition. Does not appear to be missing any pages. Overall worn, though sturdy and readable.

Abert, and the two uncaptioned plates. All plates are slightly yellowed. This is the so-called new edition, the first edition published in 1845. Citede in Wagner-Camp 115, Howes F-370, Cowan p.223, Sabin 25845. 456pp. Size: Octavo.
