Octavo, original red cloth boards with title and author stamped in gilt to spine, pp 52.b&w plates, frontispiece illustration of family crest, an armorial lion with flag and the Latin motto " Nec prece nec pretio" [Neither by entreaty nor by bribery], which is used by the Fremantle family and the City of Fremantle. The boards have a small, faded mark / watermark at the foot of the spine, not affecting the rest of the book. Bookplate of previous owner (Marchant James, Western Australian historian). Several small annotations in ink and corrections, possibly made by the author or owner of the book. Very occasional light pencil mark in text. Very good condition. Not in SLWA NLA. A history of the Fremantle family, closely associated with the settling of Western Australia since the arrival and proclamation of possession for the Crown by Sir Charles Fremantle in 1829. Fremantle's older brother was Thomas Fremantle, 1st Baron Cottesloe. The author traces the genealogy and history of the family, both in Western Australia and in England, up until the 4th Lord Cottesloe. Mentioned in references by Ruth Marchant James 1994, "Fremantle: the Man and his Family" [Early Days, vol. 10, part 6: 659-669]. A scarce Western Australian book.
