Hardcover. Zustand: Very good condition. Limited edition. 1/350 copies. This is #326, hand-numbered on the colophon at the rear of the facsimile volume. This set provides a stunning full reproduction of the beautiful and notable late medieval illuminated manuscript Haggadah, held at the State Library of Darmstadt, along with critical text discussing the work. Originally produced by the scribe Israel Ben Meir of Heidelberg, in conjunction with an unidentified artist, this fascinating Passover Haggadah has been noted for its unique illustrations. Scholars have remarked on its inclusion of egalitarian images of men and women, and have noted that it visually seems to have more in common with non-Jewish works from the period. The last two leaves of the manuscript are not connected with the Passover text, but instead depict a hunting scene and the Fountain of Youth. All though the scholarly text of this edition written by German Rabbi Bruno Italiener (1881-1951) along with German art historian August L. Mayer (1885-1944), historian Aron Freimann (1871-1948) and Adolf Schmidt, dates the manuscript to the 14th century, superseding scholarship has now ruled out that possibility for stylistic reasons. The manuscript is now believed to have been produced sometime around 1430. Vol.1 (text): Octavo. xi, [1], 313, [1]pp. [+ 16 plates]. Pebbled leather over decorative paper boards with gilt ruling, tooling and lettering on the spine. Top edge in gilt. Frontispiece b/w photographic reproduction of the binding of the original manuscript. German and Hebrew text throughout, critically discusses the Haggadah manuscript, and analyses a number of other related manuscripts from the period. The final leaves contain 16 plates of high quality b/w photogravure reproducing pages of various manuscripts mentioned in the text. Vol. 2 ("tafelband", facsimile volume): Folio. Housed in its original cardboard slipcase. 58 double-sided leaves. Pebbled leather over decorative paper boards with gilt ruling, tooling and lettering on the spine. Top edge in gilt. This volume gorgeously reproduces, in full, the content of the illuminated manuscript Haggadah. The reproduction utilizes, what was at the time, state of the art full color photography, highlighted with lustrous gilt overprinting. The visual reproduction is surprising in its faithful, accurate and vibrant reproduction of the leaves, text and imagery. The resulting facsimile is successfully able to replicate the look and feel as well as the physical aspects of the interior of the original manuscript. Text volume with very minor rubbing to extremities of the binding, and some minor foxing to the bottom and foredges of the book block. Interior with minor sporadic foxing to the pages, usually confined to the margins. Facsimile volume with some very minor rubbing to the extremities of the binding. Interior clean and vibrant. Book blocks tight. Bindings in very good+ to near fine, interiors in very good to near fine condition overall.
Hardcover. Zustand: g+ to vg. First edition. The "Union Catalog of Hebrew Manuscripts and Their Location" is comprised of two volumes: - Volume One: Index (1973). Folio. XXXIV, 280pp. Original full green cloth, with gold lettering to spine. Index by Menahem Hayyim Schmelzer; Introduction by Salo Wittmayer Baron, and "Aron Freimann: A Personal Tribute" by Shelomo Dov Goiten. This volume includes a list of frequently used abbreviations; a list of locations, owners of manuscripts, catalogs, and their symbols; and an authoritative index in Roman characters. - Volume Two (1964). Folio. [4]pp (Title and Preface), 462pp. Original full green cloth, with silver lettering to spine. Preface by Saul Lieberman. This volume contains some 12,000 handwritten cards photo-mechanically reproduced. These cards were prepared over a long period of time by the late Professor Aron Freimann who died before he was able to complete his work and to see it through the press. Freimann's intention was to provide scholars with a complete list of all known manuscripts written in Hebrew characters. The entries on the cards usually include the following information: 1. Hebrew title 2. Author, in German or in English transliteration 3. Subject, in German or in English 4. Location, generally indicated by symbols 5. Bibliography The book is arranged by titles and notes the known locations of the manuscripts. Freimann's catalog is based almost solely on secondary material, catalogs, and other printed sources. Many of the sources he used were compiled over a century ago and never revised. The catalog is incomplete, and the locations of some of the manuscripts are no longer valid. Its references to secondary literature about the manuscript or author, however, are valuable to the bibliographer and researcher. Therefore, it remains an important bibliographical resource. Very minor shelf wear. Binding and interior in overall very good condition.

Frankfurt am Main, 1932, 1st ed., XII,646 pag., printed in 2 columns by M. Lehrberger & Co., original printed blue card wrappers, small quarto (very good copy). = Important reference work by Aron Freimann (1871-1948), who was able to escape nazi-Germany and find exile in New York in 1938. Contains detailed entries with references and a useful index. Regarded as the dean of Jewish bibliographers of his time, Freimann's works incl. several standard reference tools. His catalogue of the Frankfurt Stadtbibliothek's Judaica collection testified not only to the extent of the library's holdings, which he built into one of the most prominent in Europe, but also to the measure of scientific librarianship which he introduced into this neglected field" (Strauss/ Röder, International Biographical Dictionary of Central European Emigres 1933-1945 - Volume II: The Arts, Sciences and Literature, 324).

Rare. l In volume 2 12.000 handwritten cards are photomechanically reproduced. It is the fruit of the work of the Jewish bibliographer Aron Freimann (1871-1948). It contains data from a variety of sources in private and public collections. Freimann started his work as a student in Germany, he took his cards with him when he escaped the Nazi's in 1938. Some of the Hebrew manuscripts he described disappeared with their owners during the Holocaust. We only know them by the cards on this catalog. Vol. 1 is an index volume by Menahem Hayyim Schmelzer, preceded by a tribute on Freimann by Shelomo Dov Goitein. Freimann was bibliographer. The volumes are in good condition. Tight binding. A paper sticker is pasted down at the bottom of the spines; in both volumes a small paper sticker is pasted down on the verso of the titlepage. (Small signs of their former existence in a public library). Volume two a bit wear at the edges.
