Bound in paper-covered boards with design based on woven cloth in red and green, title to upper board and backstrip, with similarly-printed dustjacket (no spine title) and a later acetate wrapper, TLS from William Haigh, the 'devisor' of the book, to Lady Moynihan laid-in. 'Seen through the press' by Francis Meynell, with covers and endpapers by Barnett Freedman and printed at the Curwen Press, this book has impeccable fine press credentials. Lavish is rather overstating things, but it is all most elegantly done. It might be said (with no disrespect intended to the Huddersfield and District Woollen Export Board) that the book's quality is rather out of proportion to its subject matter, which stands now as a record of a vanished industry. One strongly suspects that Haigh was a fine printing enthusiast himself. A lovely copy, with an uncommonly well-preserved dustjacket. Fine, with Near Fine (unclipped price, very slight crushing along the top edge) dustjacket, with the small discreet blind-embossed stamp of Dr Trevor Weston to the corner of the rear endpaper. Top edge dust soiled and with a touch of bruising to two corner tips. Very good indeed in the handsome Barnett Freedman-designed pictorial dust wrapper, non-price-clipped, but a little chafed and chipped at the extremities with two short closed tears and a little accompanying creasing. The author's first novel, a mystery set in a post-war French monastery and in-part inspired by his own conversion to Roman Catholicism a year prior to publication. In 1961 Griffin published his most celebrated work, 'Black Like Me', an account of his efforts to pass as a black man in the Deep South in the late fifties to study racial equality and segregation first-hand.…

[London: Vincent Brooks, Day & Son Ltd for Shell-Mex and BP, 1935.] Colour lithographed peepshow of seven sections with two peepholes, designed and drawn on stone by Barnett Freedman, showing a wintry night-time view of London through the left aperture and a sunny country scene through the right. The sides, when extended, carry the wording "Be up-to-date Shellubricate." Text and imprint printed to verso: "Designed and drawn on stone by Barnett Freedman and printed and manufactured by Vincent Brooks, Day & Son Ltd., London." Constructed of paper and card, 145 × 235 mm (closed), extending to approximately 520 mm. Minor rubbing at corners and light spotting, with 3 tape repairs to the reverse of the card towards the rear, otherwise a bright, complete and well-preserved example of a fragile promotional piece. Overall, in very good condition.  A celebrated advertising peepshow produced for Shell as part of the company's "You Can Be Sure of Shell" campaign, for which major British artists including Paul Nash, Edward Bawden, McKnight Kauffer and Barnett Freedman created a sequence of posters and keepsakes in the mid-1930s. Freedman's double-view design contrasts two seasonal landscapes visible through the Shell emblem, illustrating the company's claim that its petrol was "blended in accordance with the variation of Winter and Summer temperatures." Issued in limited numbers as a corporate promotional item, few examples survive in this condition. …
