Fair to poor condition with heavy external wear, front hinge intact, rear hinge reglued and secure text block basically sound but not tight with edges of several sections protruding past the text block, all plates present but most detached, some signs of moisture exposure but no dampstains and no noticeable odor. Author's widow inscription as noted dated Christmas 1881 along with another names on the verso of the front free endpaper, no other markings. Inscribed By the Author's Widow. First Edition. Three quarter leather over marbled boards, gilt spine lettering and decoration, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers, tissue protected frontis plate in each volume, books about eight inches tall. Leather started out as dark green but age has faded the spines and cover perimeters to a warm brown. Some rubbing to extremities, a bit of roughness to spine heads, good hinges, firm text blocks, very clean pages with a name neatly written at the top of the preliminary blank of the first volume, no other markings.
