In den WarenkorbFirst edition, association copy, with the initials of the activist Hugh Franklin on the front pastedown. Franklin also copied in a spirited pro-suffrage song, which contains the refrain "Votes for Women, Hooray, Hooray!" and envisions the demise of Home Secretary Herbert Gladstone: "In an ocean of brimstone he'll frizzle and wail / With one of his own feeding-tubes for a tail". Hugh Franklin (1889-1962) joined the Men's League for Women's Suffrage in 1909. His militant actions during the campaign, which included attacking Winston Churchill with a dog whip, resulted in three prison sentences. He went on hunger strike each time he was incarcerated and was force-fed on multiple occasions. Following a month's sentence in the spring of 1911, Franklin went on holiday to Cornwall with the Pethick Lawrences to recuperate. He later married the suffragette Elsie Duval. Women's Fight for the Vote is based on articles Pethick-Lawrence first published in Votes for Women, the periodical he co-founded with his wife Emmeline in 1907. It explains political developments within the suffrage movement, explains the tactics used by suffragists, and defends militant action. A wrapped issue was issued simultaneously; no priority is assigned. Octavo. Manuscript lyrics to front free endpaper recto and verso, 4 pp. of publisher's advertisements at rear. Original purple cloth, spine lettered in gilt, illustration blocked to front board in gilt. Spine sunned with a few faint marks, spots of wear to extremities, edges lightly foxed, gilt bright: a very good copy.

In den WarenkorbSecond edition, association copy, with the initials of the women's suffrage activist Hugh Franklin on the half-title. Franklin was taken on holiday by the Pethick Lawrences to recuperate following a prison sentence in early 1911; he had served a month for attempting to break Winston Churchill's windows. Hugh Franklin (1889-1962) joined the Men's League for Women's Suffrage in 1909. His militant actions during the campaign resulted in three prison sentences. On each occasion he went on hunger strike and was force fed. He later married the suffragette Elsie Duval. It explains political developments within the suffrage movement, explains the tactics used by suffragists, and defends militant action. The first edition was published less than a year previously. Octavo. Publisher's adverts to final page and insider rear wrapper. Original purple wrappers, spine lettered in black, covers lettered and decorated in gilt, yap edges. Spine sunned, loss to ends, chips to edges, short splits to wrappers at head of spine, wrappers split at head of spine, gilt dulled: a very good copy.

In den WarenkorbAn advertising supplement promoting the suffrage paper Votes for Women. It includes a history of the paper, forms through which to subscribe, order the bound compilation, and advertise in the journal, and a six-point list of advice on how to promote the paper, such as selling it in the street and putting up posters. The supplement was included with the 24 September 1909 issue. The WSPU were well-aware of the importance of press coverage, but, although they invited press photographers to all of their events, there was "a lack of interest by the press in the women's suffrage movement unless windows were broken" (Crawford, p. 460). This led to the Pethick-Lawrences founding the movement's own weekly paper, Votes for Women, in 1907. The couple continued to edit it even after their split from the WSPU and worked tirelessly to increase its circulation; supplements such as these were used to encourage a wider readership. Elizabeth Crawford, The Women's Suffrage Movement. Bifolium (page size 286 x 207 mm). Half-tone portrait vignettes of the authors. Printed in green and purple. Archival tape repair to each fore edge, nicks to extremities, chip to lower outer corner of first page: a near-fine copy of an ephemeral publication.
