Theodore Cook was a British writer and art critic, known for publishing various books about art, including 'Spirals in Nature and Art', 'A History of the English Turf', and 'The Sunlit… Hours'. He was also an avid athlete, being the captain of the football and rowing teams at Radley College, and founding the Oxford University Fencing Club in 1891. His mother, Jane Elizabeth Cook, was also an artist, who inspired Theodore in his youth to travel into Europe. His travels provided him with the passion and information for this book, which looks at the great houses of France. Most of the photographs in this book are by Frederick Evans. Evans primarily photographed architecture, especially cathedrals. He used the plantnotype technique for his photography, though as it was too expensive, was forced to use cheaper alternatives. Before retiring in 1915, he had become widely regarded as the greatest architectural photographer of his era. Prior owner's ink inscription to the top of the front free endpaper, 'Richard Blake Brown'. This could possibly be the chaplain and author Richard Blake Brown, who published 'Yet Trouble Came', 'Bright Glades', and 'The Blank Cheque'. He was known as an eccentric man, probably homosexual, and he published about fourteen books during his life, for which he received positive reviews from the like of the diarist and war-nurse Vera Brittain. With three-hundred and eighty in-text photographs. Undated, dated using Copac. Collated, complete. In the original publisher's half cloth binding with paper boards. Rubbing to the paper boards causing a little loss. Discolouration to the cloth to the front board and to the spine. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Light rubbing to the spine. Very light spotting to the foredge. Small chip to the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean, with just the odd spot due to the light spotting to the foredge. Prior owner's ink inscription to the top of the front free endpaper, 'Richard Blake Brown'. Isabella Russell's book with her signature location and date in pencil on the ffep. Eldress Isabella Russell was a Shaker musician, poet, public speaker, trustee, and eldress. In 1876 Isabella w…as appointed Church Family Office Deaconess and served in that position for a year. She then moved to the North Family or Gathering Order. Here she labored, first as Associate, then as First Eldress, guiding and encouraging those who came to Enfield to try a Shaker life. In 1885 Isabella laid down her eldership duties to become a North Family Trustee. She was passionate about equal rights for men and women. In her October 18, 1893 Commemorative Address, she praised Shakerism's founder, Ann Lee, for being in the vanguard of Women's Suffrage movement and went on to assert that the foundational Shaker principle of a virgin line was and would ever be the means of attaining the equality, justice, and peace that many aspired to.
