One of the weirdest and most wonderful of the Columbia B-noirs, a very faithful adaptation of Fredric Brown's byzantine mystery novel, with Anita Ekberg (pre-"La Dolce Vita") put to good use as a dancing siren, and the Red Norvo Trio performing icy strains of modern jazz both live and in the soundtrack. 8 x 10 inches. Two vols bound in one, 12mo, some spotting and light staining, original green cloth "remainder" binding, lightly rubbed, inner hinges cracked, but sound. First edition. A novel about an heiress who is forced to marry her hard-drinking and debt-ridden cousin, Gerald, even though she is love with his brother, Henry. In a long preface, Craufurd explains that the novel had appeared in abridged form in a magazine, but has now been restored to its full length. He also answers at length a female critic, whose "strong distaste" was "very unmercifully expressed by the chief organ of Women's Rights in this country, both of the heroine. and of the author for not preaching the doctrine of the equality of women with man, and the right of female rebellion. I may have my private opinion whether such endurance as I have tried to depict in Alix Fairford is humiliating to our century; perhaps it is to my heroine's sex, but I am quite sure it is not humiliating to my heroine herself." Not in Wolff.

A very near fine copy, the binding square and firm with just a touch of bumping a the spine tips, the boards bright and fresh. The contents are clean throughout and without previous owners' marks. Complete with the very lightly rubbed dustwrapper that is bright and without fading, loss or tears. Not price-clipped (18s net to the lower front flap). Inscribed by the author in black ink on the front endpaper "For Robin [underlined] / From Fred / 16 Aug 1974". Scarce thus. The first full length critical study of James Bond (preceding Kingsley Amis' The James Bond Dossier), and the only such book of its type to be approved by Ian Fleming (who died in the same month and year of first publication). O. F. ('Fred') Snelling was an illustrator, film critic and biographer who became a respected member of the antiquarian trade working as a clerk for the London auctioneer Hodgson's, later Sotheby's Rare Book Department, where he first met the James Bond author and rare book collector Ian Fleming. A former book illustrator and intelligence operative in Russia, Oswald Frederick [Fred] Snelling was a highly-regarded member of the antiquarian book trade, serving as the Chief Clerk for London's Hodgson's and then Sotheby's Rare Book Department where he befriended the book collector Ian Fleming and assisted him in research for the James Bond novels. Snelling is best known for his 1964 analysis of the James Bond books, 'Double O Seven, James Bond, A Report', the earliest serious study of the James Bond phenomena.
