An attractive image of the good grey poet, inscribed in an unknown contemporary hand a line from Song of Myself (42): "And what is reason? and what is love? and what is life?" In his day books, Whitman recorded receiving photographs from Philadelphia portraitist Gutekunst i…n March 1880. This is a later phototype of the portrait, dated to the later 1880s from a signed example in the Berg Collection at NYPL. The image also appears as the frontispiece in the 1889 pocket edition of Leaves of Grass. Old markings from matting, some toning but very good 1 vols. Image 5-1/2 x 3-1/2 inches; Paper 9 x 6 inches. Signed.

The paper has been trimmed approximately 3/8" at the left, right, and bottom edges due to once having been framed with the edges curled around the glass.) Recto with some tanningmost apparent in a… horizontal band at the poet's eyelineand a bit of light foxing, and the unprinted verso with foxing, mostly confined to the top and bottom edges, and a bit of paper residue, very good overall. With Longfellow's facsimile signature in the lower margin. A striking large-format portrait of the American poet, reportedly made by the well-known Philadelphia photographer Frederick Gutekunst while Longfellow was in town for the Centennial. Gutekunst purchased the rights to the Phototype (photogravure) process in 1878, hence our date attribution.
