This was made by French Belgian artist Leopold Flameng (1831-1911) in Paris in January 1879, for Volume 10 of "The Portfolio". The Portfolio (1870-93) was a monthly art magazine founded and edited by Philip Gilbert Hamerton, and published by Seeley & Co in London. It promoted contemporary printmaking, especially etching, as a valid artform. It played a dynamic role in the Etching Revival in Britain, which included high profile champions such as Whistler. This etching is after Frederic, Lord Leighton's portrait in the National Portrait Gallery in London: "According to the sitter's wife [Isabel] 'Leighton began to paint Richard on the 26th of April [1872], and it was very amusing. Richard was so anxious that he should paint his necktie and his pin, and kept saying to him every now and then, "Don't make me ugly, there's a good fellow" - both Richard and I always retained the pleasantest memory of the many happy hours we passed in his studio'. Burton was at this time awaiting a new diplomatic post, and would leave London for Iceland in early June. The deep scar on the left cheek had been received in a javelin attack at Berbera Somalia in 1855, as Burton set out with British explorers on the first of two expeditions to seek the source of the White Nile" (References: Met No. 2015.653.41; NPG No. D38802; "The Etching Revival in Britain", Saturday Gallery website).

Frederic Leighton, the painter and some time President of the Royal Academy, was raised to the peerage in the New Years Honours list of 1896, the first painter to receive this honour. He died the day after the patent making him Baron Leighton, of Stretton, was issued. Leighton remains the shortest lived peer in history. The recipient of the ticket - W. T. Thistleton-Dyer - was director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and son-in-law of Joseph Dalton Hooker.
