Exterior shows soiling, edges and corners are bumped/softened and there's a couple of small tears to the cloth near the top of the spine. Rear board shows bubbles under cloth along bottom edge and near spine. Interior binding is good, no hinge issues as it appears book was never read since most of the page quadrants are still uncut along the top edges. End pages and pastedowns for moderate to heavy foxing, this issue is limited mainly to these pages as text pages are clean except for some dust darkening along the top edges. Limited edition of 150 copies on large paper and signed by the author, of which this is copy number 32. No other handwriting noted, no signatures or bookplates, no library markings present. On red cloth good condition there is some bending to the folio and the outer cloth is fading has wellington's crest imbeedded in front cover inside signs of staining on flyleaf cover and on certain pages within but text remains bright and clear as do the plates. Large 4to, pp.[224], with an etched frontispiece by George Cruikshank illustrating 'The Maniac Monk', dated 1866; printed on very thin paper in various shades of pale yellow; a fine copy in the original red cloth, front cover lettered gilt, bright blue glazed endpapers; a few small stains to front cover.First edition, privately printed, a presentation copy inscribed on the title-page 'From the Author. Fraser's eccentric collection, which included poems on Byron and Wellington, gothick-tinged medievalism, and comic poetastery, was printed in two distinct formats: the first as here on thin, pale yellow paper with a frontispiece by Cruickshank, and the second on very thick paper with three additional plates by Doré. Conservative politician, author, and member of the Society of Dilettanti, Fraser (18261898) was an avid collector, bequeathing Byron's sofa to the Garrick Club, Dickens's chair to the Travellers', and the manuscript of Gray's Elegy to Eton; much of his library was sold at Sotheby's in April 1901.
