George MacDonald Fraser (1925-2008) based the idea of Flashman on the original character created by Thomas Hughes in Tom Brown's School Days, published in 1857. The Flashman character was a fictionalized look at the 19th century British Army, but Fraser was always praised for his historical accuracy in portraying real world events.
