Three short essays, compiled by Southern Railway of England for the Royal Jubilee and printed at The Curwen Press, which provide a guide for visiting tourists. The first, entitled 'The Beauty of Southern England', speaks of the chalk cliffs of Dover, the apple orchards of Kent, the South Downs and numerous other Literary connections by Mais, who was famous for his travel guides; the second, 'Social and Sporting Season', discusses Goodwood, cricket at the Oval and Lords, as well as other pastimes such as dances, fishing and bathing by the journalist Charles Graves (brother of Robert); and the final essay 'The Birthplace of English History' gives a run-down of Britain from the stone age to the 19th century, via the Battle of Hastings and Stonehenge. A lovely example with the woodcuts by Ravilious. An increasingly elusive Ravilious ephemeral item. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
