Una vera damnatio memoriae ha quasi eclissato Garelli dalle pagine della storia dopo la sua scomparsa, avvenuta nel 1973. Così, dopo un lungo periodo di silenzio, intervallato da isolati episodi espositivi, la figura complessa di Franco Garelli torna a reclamare una rilettura del proprio profilo artistico. Scopo di questo libro è dunque restituire l'immagine e il sentimento di un artista lirico, se non certo festoso quantomeno realmente poetico e solare; una immagine nuova rispetto alla precedente linea della critica degli anni sessanta e settanta che poneva l'accento sul tema struggente, lacerante e greve della infelice condizione umana nella società. Nicoletta Colombo e Marco Franzone rendono finalmente giustizia a questo eclettico esploratore dei nuovi orizzonti della materia, che muoveva la propria indagine su numerosi fronti, disegno, pittura, scultura, in escalation verso il ricorso a vernici industriali e a materiali disparati dall'organico all'inorganico: legni, ceramica, bronzo, ferri, persino paste alimentari e formaggi, fino alla più avanzata riqualificazione di trouvailles meccaniche e di laminati.
