Lateinische Handschrift auf Papier, 1 Bl., ca. 13,5 × 9,3 cm, alt montiert (Unterlage ca. 16,5 x 12 cm), gebräunt und etwas stockfleckig Wolfgang Franzius (Franz, Frantz, 1564-1628): Nach dem Schulbesuch in seiner Heimatstadt Plauen und in Küstrin, begann Franz seine Universitätsstudien zunächst in Frankfurt a. d. Oder, wo sein Onkel lehrte, wandte sich jedoch 1585 der weit berühmteren Alma Mater von Wittenberg zu. Dort erwarb er 1587 den Magistergrad, lehrte danach an der Philosophischen Fakultät, wo er 1598 schließlich die Professur für Geschichte erhielt und im selben Jahr zum Doktor der Theologie promoviert wurde. 1601 wurde Franz Propst von Kemberg, konnte jedoch bereits 1605 in seine Wittenberger Wahlheimat zurückkehren, wo er in der Nachfolge des verstorbenen Salomon Gesner die theologische Professur und die damit verbundene Propstei der Wittenberger Schlosskirche übernahm. In der Folgezeit stand Franz der Universität dreimal als Rektor vor und erlangte 1616 mit dem Assessorat am Wittenberger Konsistorium einen weiteren einflussreichen Posten in der Lutherstadt. Franz war ein wichtiger Vertreter der lutherischen Orthodoxie, der eine Vielzahl einflussreicher Schriften hinterlassen hat, die teils mehrfach aufgelegt wurden (- v.a. seine "Animalium historia sacra", die bis ins 18. Jahrhundert hinein ein Bestseller blieb). Franz hatte in seinen Wittenberger Anfangsjahren einen schweren Stand, da man in dort des Kalvinismus verdächtigte; gleichwohl ragen in seinem Werk gerade die Streitschriften gegen den Kalvinismus und den Sozinianismus wie auch seine gegen die katholische Kirche gerichteten Traktate hervor.…
