Dentro de los numerosos estudios sobre la relación entre el cristianismo primitivo y la Antigüedad pagana desarrollados en la primera mitad del siglo XX por el historiador, arqueólogo, filólogo y sacerdote católico F. J. Dölger, destaca este escrito breve. En él se aborda un interesantísimo tema: la relación existente entre las bendiciones y ritos vespertinos dedicados a la luz que realizaban los paganos, y las bendiciones y ceremonias cristianas, tanto domésticas como comunitarias. Mientras que los paganos aclamaban a la luz como «amada luz» y «luz buena», los cristianos, por su parte, llamaban a Cristo «Luz sin ocaso» y «Luz gozosa». Los ritos paganos del encendido de las lámparas dieron paso tanto a lucernarios cotidianos (las vísperas) como a vigilias solemnes de Pascua, en las que ya en la Antigüedad se alternaba la aclamación Lumen Christi con su respuesta Deo gratias.
