Frankl war vor allem durch seine historischen Balladen (Habsburglied) und Dichtungen (Sagen aus dem Morgenland) hervorgetreten. Seine lyrische Publikation Die Universität - entstanden in den Revolutions-Tagen von 1848 - erregte hohes Aufsehen und wurde über eine Million mal nachgedruckt. Seit 1838 war Frankl Sekretär der Wiener Jüdischen Kultusgemeinde, er hatte zudem den Posten als Direktor des Wiener Musikvereins inne und war Professor für Ästhetik.
