Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. First Edition (stated). Bound in green cloth with spine titles stamped in gilt. Corresponding 1946 dates to the title and copyright pages, indicating the first edition. No additional printings. 280 pages. (See photos for list of authors provided on the front panel of the dust wrapper). No mention in this volume of any other titles, pending or otherwise. The cloth shows only a few faint marks, as if a damp hand had once touched the book. Virtually no wear; the book is clean, tight and unmarked with solid hinges and a square binding. The dust jacket has a sun-faded spine with a 1-1/4" x 3/4" chip at the head of the spine; the rear panel is a bit soiled and has a couple of light stains. The spine, which does not photograph well, is clearly legible; the photo may be hard to read. This is the first book in a long line of "Teen-Age" books, initially published by Lantern Press; reprints by Grosset & Dunlap began to appear in 1953. An uncommon volume in the first state jacket, seen here. We also have a copy for sale of the third volume, "Teen-Age Sports Stories", in a similar dust jacket. Leslie Quirk fans may be interested, as there is a story by his long-time friend and collaborator, Horatio Winslow, in this volume. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.…

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good+. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good+. Bound in mustard cloth with titles and decoration stamped in black. No additional printings. 239 pages. Title 2 in this series. Early printing of this title, listing only three "Teen-Age" titles on the rear panel of the dust wrapper and a single title, "Jerry Dowd, Fraternity Man", also published in 1947, on the rear flap. The first "Teen-Age" title, "Companion", was published in 1946; this was followed by three more in the 1947, only two of which are listed on this book. See photos for the titles listed on the rear panel; which do not include "Teen-Age Stories of the West". The cloth shows only a touch of edgewear, with slight creasing near the top of the front cover (see photos). Internally, the book is clean, tight and unmarked, with solid hinges and a square binding. The dust wrapper has light edgewear and rubbing only; it is not chipped or price-clipped. McBride states that Lantern Press books with no additional printings are first editions; we will let the buyer decide. Unlike the previous title, this book has no title page date to indicate first edition status, but it may be that Lantern discontinued this practice in 1947. Other early titles we have seen follow the pattern indicated by McBride. The jacket is now in mylar. See our copy of the first book in this series, "Teen-Age Companion", also for sale now. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.…

Tales of Magic and Mystery was edited by famed magician and then future author of The Shadow, Walter Gibson. Containing a mixture of articles about both magic and fantasy/mystery, it only lasted the 5 issues. Magic articles included ones about famed magician/escape artist Harry Houdini. The title is mostly famous for the first publication of H. P. Lovecraft's "Cool Air" in the March 1928 issue, a story that was initially rejected by Weird Tales. It also published short stories by pulp writer Frank Owen (like Lovecraft, a frequent contributor to Weird Tales), and by science fiction writer Miriam Allen deFord. Howard Thurston and Walter Gibson authored many of the articles, and all issues were illustrated by Earle Bergey. MA Consignment. 1392109. Special Collections - Downstairs.…
