Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: fine. First edition. A fine, fresh, unread as-new copy in equally fine dust jacket. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. 306 pp. with bibliography. Scarce. A biography of Enoch L. "Nucky" Johnson (1883-1968), the Republican powerhouse from Atlantic City, the "boss of the Boardwalk', who dominated New Jersey politics in the early decades of the 20th century. He was brilliantly depicted as "Nucky Thompson" in the HBO miniseries "Boardwalk Empire" by actor Steve Buscemi. In real life, Johnson was the Atlantic City political boss, sheriff of Atlantic County, businessman and crime boss who dominated county, and indeed all of south Jersey and beyond, from the 1910s until the 1940s. In this lively biography, author Frank J. Ferry, who in 1958 was appointed Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New Jersey and in the 1960s represented him in a federal case, takes the liberty of recreating some of the dialogue between Nucky and others. He based these conversations on details he discussed personally with Johnson as well as on transcripts of testimony before the Senate in 1928 and from his 1941 trial.
