Danach Verwendungen als Wachoffizier und Kommandant auf Schnellbooten, in der Ausbildung von Unteroffizieren und Offizieren sowie auf Zerstörern. Nach dem Admiralstabslehrgang 1974 76 wechselte er zwischen Truppen- und Stabsverwendungen, u.a. Führungsstab Streitkräfte, Kommandeur 2. Schnellbootgeschwader, NATO HQ Brüssel und SHAPE. 1987 1989 war er Kommandeur der Schnellbootflottille, danach Stellvertretender Stabsabteilungsleiter Militärpolitik und Führung" und Chef des Stabes FüS. 1994 1999 bekleidete er das Amt des Stellvertretenden Generalinspekteurs der Bundeswehr, des Inspekteur der Zentralen Militärischen Dienststellen der Bundeswehr sowie des Beauftragten für Reservistenangelegenheiten der Bundeswehr. 1999 2004 war er Präsident der Bundesakademie für Sicherheitspolitik, Bonn/Berlin und ist seit Mai 2004 Vorsitzender der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Wehrtechnik e.V., Bonn.
