In den WarenkorbHuile sur panneau, 41 x 33 cm, (1870), cadre doré mouluré (style Empire). François Bonvin (1817-1887) est un peintre français appartenant au courant réaliste. Issu d'un milieu modeste, il se forme en autodidacte au Louvre et à l'Académie Suisse ; avec trois tableaux au Salon de 1849, il se spécialise dans la peinture de paysage,… et des sujets de la vie quotidienne. Ami de Gustave Courbet, il expose au Salon des Refusés. Le tableau que nous présentons synthétise les préoccupations d'un artiste réaliste au grain très présent et à la texture utilisant l'empâtement, quoique léger. L'amateur, vraisemblablement un autoportrait, regarde un tableau de paysage. Dans le motif représenté enfin, celui d'une scène de genre, on retrouve deux influences majeures de Bonvin : le XVIIe hollandais pour l'intimité de la scène et la gamme chromatique réduite, et le XVIIIe français pour le thème de l'amateur d'art. Bonvin a fait de nombreux séjours en Hollande, et s'est également formé au sein d'une des plus importantes collections de tableaux sur le XVIIIe français, libéralement ouverte aux artistes et formant le fleuron des collections XVIIIe du Louvre, la collection Lacaze.
