Francis Willughby (1635-1672) was a pioneering naturalist, often considered one of the founders of modern scientific ornithology. Published posthumously, this book was completed by Willughby's friend and collaborator, John Ray (1627-1705). Folio in 4s (14" x 8 7/8", 355mm x 235mm). [Full collation available.] With 80 etched-engraved plates (2 bird-catching diagrams, 78 ornithological) and 2 typeset plates of charts. Bound in contemporary speckled calf with a double blind fillet border. With a vertical division near the spine-edge of a double blind fillet and a blind scalloped roll. On the spine, six raised bands with gilt rolls. In the panels, a double gilt fillet border surrounding gilt scrollwork. Title gilt to the second panel within a double gilt fillet border. Gilt roll to the edges of the boards. All edges of the text-block speckled red. Both boards starting at the upper edges, but still solid. With some rubbing and staining generally. With marginal worming at the lower edge from the front paste-down to Qq3, not affecting the text. Altogether a bright copy with fine margins (some 40mm at the fore, 30mm at the bottom and 20mm at the top) and an exceptional impression of the plates. On the title-page, the early ink inscription "Hindlater" (?). Willughby (1635-1672) was the pupil of Ray (1627-1705) at Trinity College, Cambridge, long a hub of natural science. Willughby revolutionized the taxonomy of birds by classing them not according to their edibility or personalities, but by the ways their habitat and behavior interacted with their physical forms. He died young, however, and it was his tutor Ray who brought his work to press, first in Latin (Ornithologiae libri tres. London, 1676) and here in English. Additional engraved title-page by Paul van Somer, 187 fine engraved plates by Richard Hunt, including 14 with letterpress captions laid-down as issued, engraved vignette head-pieces and initials (some minor worming, not affecting the images). Contemporary speckled calf, the spine in 7 compartments with 6 raised bands, morocco lettering-piece in one, the others decorated with small gilt tools (joints cracked, extremities a bit scuffed). Provenance: early annotations to captions; 19th-century printed paper lot number (355) at the foot of the spine. Second edition, a re-issue of the sheets of the 1686 first edition with the 'Index Piscium' added at the end, and printed identification slips pasted onto some of the plates. This copy retains the original 1686 title-page, more usually replaced by one dated 1743. Willughby met John Ray, his lecturer at Trinity College, Cambridge in 1653, they became lifelong friends collaborators in a number of natural history projects, including a plan ". to reduce the several Tribes of Things to a Method; and to give accurate Descriptions of the several Species, from a strict View of them. And forasmuch as Mr. Willughby's Genius lay chiefly to animals, therefore he undertook the Birds, Beasts, Fishes, and Insects, as Mr. Ray did the Vegetables". (Derham, Remains, 48). Sadly Willughby died in 1672, and Ray undertook to publish what he could of Willughby's incomplete history of animals. The "Ornithology" was published first in 1676, followed by this the "Historia Piscium" in 1786. Financed by the Royal Society, with assistance from John Fell, bishop of Oxford , the Society's celebrated President, Samuel Pepys, underwrote 79 of the engraved plates, and other Society members sponsored the remaining plates. Despite its importance and sumptuous production, the work was slow to sell. Royal Society members therefore received part of their salaries in copies of the book, and the Society authorised this re-issue in 1740 (published in 1743). The "History of insects" was the last of Willughby's works to be published, although Ray did not live to see this project through. First edition - a tall, wide-margined copy on thick paper - of this important illustrated work on ornithology, "the first systematic attempt to comprehensively itemise the British avifauna" (Callahan, p.28), from the library of the Earls of Macclesfield. The two authors, Francis Willughby (1635-1672) and John Ray (1627-1705), met at Cambridge, and spent a few years touring Britain and Europe and collecting fresh data, through observation and dissection, on the hundreds of bird species featured in this book. Willughby was alone credited as an author, as a posthumous tribute. Ornithologiae libri tres "had an unprecedented scientific rigour for its time and classified birds according to their detailed physical characteristics, including plumage. dividing [them] into landbirds and waterbirds, and using their observed physical characteristics to further subdivide into classes" (Callahan, p. 28). The chapters discuss the outward and inward appearance of birds, their age, and generation, followed by a catalogue with detailed information on each species and genus, and by 77 magnificent engravings. Some worming to the rear free endpaper and pastedown but not affecting any other adjacent leaves, degrees of browning to the contents, occasionally very dark, though a good number of the plates remain fresh, some minor wear to the extremities, else very good. Francis Willughby (1635-72) and John Ray (1627-1705) met as students at Trinity College, Cambridge. Whilst Ray's interests primarily led him to the study of botany, Willughby studied the animal world - firstly in Britain, then Europe between the years 1663-65 with fellow naturalist Philip Skippon. Ray published his account of their European travels and researches in his 1673 work "Observations Topographical, Moral, & Physiological; Made in a Journey Through Part of the Low-Countries, Germany, Italy, and France.". Considered "the foundation of scientific ornithology", Willughby's name is commonly attributed as the sole author of "Ornithologiæ Libri Tres."; Ray downplaying his contribution to that of a mere compiler. However, he should be more correctly considered the joint author of this wonderful work, Willughby dying before he could collate and edit his extensive notes into a coherent whole. Thereafter Ray took on the task, largely rewriting and augmenting the rudiments of his friend's work. The cost of the engravings were born by Willughby's widow, Emma, and, for this reason, this issue of the book is often referred to as the "Widow's Edition". Though Ray privately expressed some dissatisfaction with the illustrations, partly due to failings in the engravers' work but also a result of defects in his own instructions to them, he also expressed pride, writing in the subsequent English edition of 1678: ".the Figures. are the best and truest, that is, most like the live Birds, of any hitherto engraven in Brass." 'It is difficult to underestimate what enormous labour this work entailed. Willughby and Ray's goal was to see, describe and dissect every known bird â" assumed to be about 500 at that time (in fact, we now know that there are around 10,000 species of birds in the world). Their second aim was to use these descriptions to construct a biologically meaningful classification of birds. First edition of the first large English work on ichtyology. The work was a collaboration between Willughby and John Ray, and includes essays on the definition of fish, on their anatomy, and on theory physiology. The work devides fish according into the Aristotelean categories of Cetacei, Cartilaginei, and Spinosi, and includes a description of the reproductive organs and a rejection of the theory of reproduction through spontaneous generation.
