The 'Douglas Cause' was a notable legal struggle contested in Great Britain during the 1760s that not only gripped the nation but ultimately led to an array of death threats and rioting. The main parties involved were Archibald Douglas and James Douglas-Hamilton, the seventh Duke of Hamilton who went to court in order to claim the vast tracts of land and fortune that had previously belonged to Archibald Douglas, the third Marquess and first Duke of Douglas.
