Dans un monde qui marche trop souvent a l'envers et dans lequel l'echelle des valeurs s'emprunte desormais vers le bas, il est devenu tre…s difficile de revendiquer une certaine idee de la beaute, meme si traditionnellement elle apparait comme evidente et legitime. Celui qui prefere la qualité au vulgaire, ce qui est profond au superficiel ou ce qui est grand a l'insignifiant, risque de passer pour un insupportable pur et dur. De nos jours, cette etiquette est pejorative et pourtant, ne la merite pas qui veut. Etre pur-et-dur m'apparait en effet comme un privilege qui colle a la peau (qu'elle soit noire ou blanche), grace a une étrange predestination bien souvent incomprehensible pour le commun des mortels. Des etres irreversiblement marques par ce sublime destin comme Amadeus Mozart, Frederic Chopin, Gabriel Faure, Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, Lili Boulanger, Art Tatum, Lester Young, Billie Holiday, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Charlie Parker, Fats Navarro, Bill Evans, etc., ont payé tres cher leur appartenance au clan exclusif des purs-et-durs, car pour eux, la puree dure ..

Superb biographical essay on the legendary pianist Bud Powell by his friend and Paris protector. Paudras's relationship with the troubled Powell, as portrayed in this book, became the basis for Bernard Tavernier's film Round Midnight. The book forms a pair with his archival essay on Charlie Parker, To Bird with Love (1981). Quarto. Profusely illustrated. Original white cloth with Powell's autograph in blind to the front board. With dust jacket. Very good in very slightly rubbed jacket with one or two minor chips.
