Bensley for his notable achievements in the field of histochemistry. This special symposium presented at the University of Chicago on November 13, 1942, was limited to the theme of the physical and chemical organization of the cytoplasm, the principal subject of the investigations of Dr. Bensley and his students for the past decade. Most biologists will find this volume of especial value and interest for in this collection of papers is presented not only an historical account of the rapid progress made in recent years in this field of fundamental knowledge but the lines along which new discoveries may be expected in the future. Students of cellular biology who have been puzzled by the speed, orderliness and rhythmicity of cellular processes and the unique physical and chemical properties of the cytoplasm will find here significant information regarding structural, chemical and functional relationships. Of particular interest to the morphologist is 1) the account of the isolation and chemical analysis of mitochondria, 2) the separation of the fibrous proteins ellipsin ahd plasmosin which are apparently responsible for the stability of cell structure and the sol-gel transformations in the cytoplasm respectively, 3) the discovery and separation of submicroscopic glycogen particulates and 4) the isolation and chemical analysis of the submicroscopic particulates of Claude. Doubtless the physiologist, pathologist, biochemist and physical chemist will find material of equal interest and profit."-A. A. Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Hardcover. Bound in full leather, with raised cords on the spine, gold bands, and title label stamped with gold lettering. Corners bumped, wear to hinges, uneven fading to the boards. Binding tight. Text block square. Title page dated 1732. 456 pages. Four handwritten lines on the final page have been all crossed out, likely by the same person who wrote them. Rear free endpaper torn in half diagonally and half missing. Nice and clean throughout, with nothing surprising for book from 1732. A few of the plates have inexpert hand-coloring in blue and purple. Front endpapers hold the surprises. There is a printed bookplate (Maryland Historical Society) with large WITHDRAWN rubber stamp on the inside front cover, with typed provenance from the estate of Julia McHenry Howard, dated 1959. Above that there is a smaller printed bookplate that says 'F.S. Key. Georgetown - Columbia.' On the free endpaper, the name E.P. Key is signed (in pencil and then traced over in pen). Francis Scott Key was the author of the Star Spangled Banner -- as well as Attorney General for Washington DC from 1833-1841. Key wrote the song in 1814. E.P. Key was likely his daughter Elizabeth Phoebe Key (1803-1897). And the bookplate of Julia McHenry Howard is his grand-daughter, who died in 1959. A remarkable 3 generations of the Key family. In den WarenkorbA superb and unique political artefact: a book owned by Britain's first and longest-serving prime minister, Robert Walpole, and by the first female prime minister, Margaret Thatcher. The volume is a collection of the writings of Francis Osborne (1593-1659), one of the leading essayists and political observers of the 17th century. Walpole has signed his name on the front free endpaper and inscribed a quote from Osborne's satirical essay on the character of a cook: "A Cooke is a baud to the mouth" [sic]. Thatcher has inserted a handwritten note on 10 Downing Street's letterhead: "This book was owned by Robert Walpole and given to me by Tim Bell". Bell (1941-2019) was her chief public relations adviser, who created the famous "Labour Isn't Working" poster and was instrumental in Thatcher's three general election victories. As a humorous take on the title of the first book, Advice to a Son, Thatcher presented the book to her son Mark, from whom it was acquired. The volume also has the early 19th-century bookplate of Cholmondeley Castle library, built by a descendant of Robert Walpole, alongside the bookplate of noted bibliophile Arnold Muirhead (1900-1988). Provenance: Stephen C. Massey. ESTC R25511; R234716; R220295; R200740; R200748. 5 works bound in 1, duodecimo (145 x 80 mm). Contemporary calf, 19th-century green label lettered in gilt to spine, spine ruled in gilt and blind, covers ruled in blind with blind-stamped floral motifs, red edges. Housed in a dark brown cloth flat-back box by the Chelsea Bindery. Minor restoration at extremities, slight chip to calf on rear cover, very occasional short closed tears without loss to text, a few pages closely cropped with very occasional minor loss to text, tiny contemporary ink annotation to first title page, pencilled library marks on other title pages. A very good copy.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, Douglas Haig's copy, with his ownership signature on the title page, bookplate on the front pastedown, and annotations to the text. Haig was mentored by the author, and this copy was cited at length by Haig in his own book, Cavalry Studies. In 1896, Haig entered the Staff College in Camberley. "A considerable influence on Haig at that institution was the eminent military historian G. F. R. Henderson, who based his tactical exercises on an intense knowledge of important recent conflicts, particularly the American Civil War and the Franco-Prussian War. Haig, as his written papers from the time attest, took good note of Henderson's instruction. Henderson, for his part, soon came to appreciate Haig's potential. He singled him out, among a body of students of whom many would become familiar names in the course of the First World War, as the individual who in time would attain the position of commander-in-chief" (ODNB). The Science of War, published posthumously, collects Henderson's articles and his lectures at the United Service Institution and the military societies of Aldershot and Ireland. Haig's annotations show he studied the copy intently. In his only published book, Cavalry Studies (1907), Haig quotes this copy extensively (pp. 4-6), in defence of his view that "large armies entail large numbers of cavalry" - all the quoted passages are here sidelined in pencil. The annotations comprise pencilled underlining and sidelining, with a few crosses and one question mark in the margins - the restrained style typical of books from Haig's library. Some passages highlighted by Haig seem especially pertinent considering his future career. Haig sidelines Henderson's warning of the strain of modern warfare and soldiers' unwillingness to suffer heavy losses - "unless even the private soldier is animated by something higher than the mere habit of mechanical obedience, panic, shirking, and wholesale surrender will be the ordinary features of a campaign". He marks the dictum that war "is the art of the man who dare take the risk". Haig's bookplate includes his title as captain in the 7th Hussars - he served in the regiment from 1885 to 1899, and evidently continued to use his existing stock of bookplates. Octavo. Half-tone photographic portrait, 4 maps. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, black endpapers. Spine a little sunned, slightly rubbed, light foxing. A very good copy.
