Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Frankie and the Wishing Orb is a heartwarming, funny rhyming picture book about a lively, blue-eyed boy named Frankie who wakes up each day with a brand-new wish. Frankie is football mad, full of energy and faster than most people can keep up with, but his wishes soon lead him into one muddle after another. With the help of a mysterious glowing orb left to him by his beloved mum, Betty, Frankie's wishes come true in the most chaotic ways. He becomes a football superstar, races at super-speed, escapes tidying, eats far too many sweets and tries to become the boss of everyone. At first, each wish feels brilliant, but before long Frankie discovers that getting exactly what you want is not always as magical as it seems. Each mishap teaches Frankie something important about friendship, kindness, patience, sharing, responsibility and listening to others. As he learns, the orb slowly grows weaker, until Frankie realises that it was never there to give him everything he wanted. It was there to help him become the best version of himself. The story blends playful rhyme, gentle humour and emotional warmth, making it ideal for children aged around 4 to 8. At its heart, it is a story about family, love, growing up and the quiet magic left behind by the people who shape us.The book is dedicated to Frank Birrell and Nanna Betty, and carries a deeply personal message about family memories, life lessons and the people who help make us who we are.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'La Duchesse Du Maine' offers a fascinating biographical portrait of Louise Bénédicte de Bourbon, a central and often controversial figure in the high society of late 17th and early 18th-century France. As the wife of the Duke of Maine, the legitimized son of Louis XIV, the Duchess carved out a unique space for herself through her intelligence, ambition, and legendary salon at the Château de Sceaux. Francis Birrell provides a detailed examination of her life, from her upbringing as a 'Princess of the Blood' to her complex role in the political maneuvers following the death of the Sun King. The book chronicles her leadership of the 'Grandes Nuits de Sceaux,' a series of elaborate intellectual and theatrical festivals that drew the finest minds of the era. Beyond the glamour of her salon, Birrell explores her fierce dedication to her husband's rank and her involvement in the high-stakes Cellamare Conspiracy, which sought to challenge the authority of the Duke of Orléans. Through this narrative, the work captures the spirit of a woman who was both a significant cultural patron and a formidable political actress. It serves as an insightful resource for readers interested in the nuances of the French Regency and the influential women who shaped the Bourbon dynasty. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Scottish gardener and botanist Thomas Blaikie (1751-1838) spent the majority of his life in France, where he designed and planted some of the most famous Parisian gardens: he drew up the original plans for the gardens of the Château de Bagatelle and renovated the Parc Monceau. He became a favourite of Marie Antoinette, and served patrons among the highest ranks of the aristocracy in pre-revolutionary France, including the Comte d'Artois and the Duc d'Orléans. After surviving the French Revolution, he received a commission to create gardens for Empress Joséphine at her Malmaison country retreat. Blaikie kept this fascinating diary from 1775 until August 1792. More than just an account of his vast gardening knowledge and achievements, the book gives a unique insight into the social history of the revolutionary period in France. It was edited by the critic and journalist Francis Birrell (1889-1935) and first published in 1931.…
