[iv], 444pp. plus an 8-page catalogue. Jean Jacques roussea (1712-78) was a French philosopher and writer. Emile, first published in 1762, is a philosophical romance (which is, in ef…fect, a treatise on education) gave such an offence to the philosophers and the Church in France that it was condemned by the "Parlement" of Paris in June 1762, and, to avoid arrest Rousseau was obliged to retire to Switzerland. The book is bound in the original orange cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with light bumping to the spine ends and the contents are tight and clean with no inscription. The unclipped dustwrapper has shelf wear with some light soiling and the spine is slightly browned. The top edge is rubbed and the corner are bumped and nicked. Pieces of up to about 1/4" are missing from the spine ends and there is a tear of about 1/2" at the bottom of the spine that has been repaired on the reverse with tape.

During the French Revolution, Emile served as the inspiration for what became a new national system of education. Rousseau seeks to describe a system of education that would enable the natural man he identifies in The Social Contract (1762) to survive corrupt society. He employs the novelistic device of Emile and his tutor to illustrate how such an ideal citizen might be educated. Emile is scarcely a detailed parenting guide but it does contain some specific advice on raising children. It is regarded by some as the first philosophy of education in Western culture to have a serious claim to completeness, as well as being one of the first Bildungsroman novels.
