First editions of Lewis Carrollâs Sylvie and Bruno and its sequel Sylvie and Bruno Concluded, the authorâs last major works of fiction, each illustrated with forty-six drawings by Harry Furniss. Two octavo volumes, handsomely bound by the Scroll Club in full red levant morocco, the spines lettered in gilt in compartments with five raised bands, gilt board edges and turn-ins, tan paper endleaves, all edges gilt, the original cloth bound in at the rear. Association copies, each inscribed by Carroll to his cousin Alice Wilson-Fox on the half-title, the first volume in purple ink, âAlice Wilson Fox from her old friend the Author, Jan. 8. 1890,â and the second in black ink, âAlice Wilson Fox, with the Authorâs affectionate regards. Dec. 27, 1893.â Alice Wilson-Fox, born Alice Raikes (1870-1958), recalled that a childhood exchange with Carroll about a looking-glass and an orange gave him, in his own words, his first idea for Through the Looking-Glass, which he later sent her on publication along with each of his other books. In fine condition, occasional minor soiling. Housed in a modern black cloth slipcase. An exceptional association, joining Carrollâs final fiction to the genesis of Through the Looking-Glass. Sylvie and Bruno (1889) and its sequel Sylvie and Bruno Concluded (1893) were Lewis Carroll?s last major works of fiction, ambitious and experimental novels that interweave a fairy tale with a Victorian social romance and reflect the mathematical and moral preoccupations of their author. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832-1898), the Oxford mathematician who wrote as Lewis Carroll, created in Alice?s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass the most enduring works of English children?s literature. The recipient of this set, his young cousin Alice Raikes, later Alice Wilson-Fox (1870-1958), recalled a childhood visit in which Carroll handed her an orange before a tall mirror and asked which hand held it, an exchange about reflection and reversal that she believed gave him the first idea for Through the Looking-Glass. He sent her that book on its publication, she remembered, together with each of his other works, among them the present two volumes.…
