The three authors of this monograph are highly distinguished, lifelong scholars of North American anthropology and archaeology, each possessing deep expertise in the Great Basin and Southwest regions. Don D. Fowler spent over 40 years at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), serving as the Mamie Kleberg Professor of Historic Preservation. Robert C. Euler chaired the anthropology departments at both Northern Arizona University and the University of Utah, and served as the president of Prescott College. Catherine S. Fowler taught alongside her husband at the University of Nevada, Reno from 1964 to 2007, where she became Professor Emerita. This concise 1969 monographpublished by the U.S. Government Printing Office as Geological Survey Professional Paper 670chronicles Major John Wesley Powell's pioneering ethnological and archaeological fieldwork among Indigenous peoples of the Colorado Plateau and Great Basin. Authored by anthropologists Don D. Fowler, Robert C. Euler, and Catherine S. Fowler, the 30-page paper reviews Powell's intermittent field studies conducted between 1868 and 1880. It highlights his interactions with Numic-speaking groups (such as the Southern Paiute, Ute, and Havasupai) and includes extracts from his original notes on Native origins, customs, and practices. Additionally, the paper features a brief overview of Grand Canyon regional archaeology, including sites identified along Powell's river routes. John Wesley Powell (March 24, 1834 September 23, 1902)[was an American geologist, U.S. Army soldier, explorer of the American West, professor at Illinois Wesleyan University, and director of major scientific and cultural institutions. He is famous for his 1869 geographic expedition, a three-month river trip down the Green and Colorado rivers, including the first official U.S. government-sponsored passage through the Grand Canyon. Powell was appointed by US president James A. Garfield to serve as the second director of the U.S. Geological Survey (18811894) and proposed, for development of the arid West, policies that were prescient for his accurate evaluation of conditions. He also spent time among the Native Peoples of the Colorado Plateau and wrote an influential classification of North American Indian languages. Two years prior to his service as director of the U.S. Geological Survey, he had become the first director of the Bureau of Ethnology at the Smithsonian Institution where he supported linguistic and sociological research and publications. He was also the first president of the Anthropological Society of Washington, founded in 1879. Powell was in favor of developing agriculture on water-rich public lands, leaving the rest for grazing animals. From 1894 to 1899, Powell held a post as lecturer on the History of Culture in the Political Science department at the Columbian University in Washington, D.C. Of particular note are six books inscribed by Nash to his wife, Frances (including five authored by Nash, one of which is in an "Author's Copy" half-leather binding). Included in the collection are 59 works by Nash, three of which feature edits to the text in Nash's hand. Twenty-seven of these Nash publications are Author's copies bound in half-leather. There are an additional 48 volumes bearing inscriptions to Nash from other authors and poets, most notably twelve volumes inscribed by S.J. Perelman. Among the 132 uninscribed volumes included here, 45 bear Ogden Nash's ownership inscription (10 bear the ownership inscription of Frances Nash). The number and range of authorial inscriptions represented in the present collections reflect Nash's wide-ranging literary friendships and professional associations. Notable among these are twelve warmly inscribed titles by humorist S.J. Perelman, whose acerbic wit is on display in a series of affectionate, playful, and sometimes satirical inscriptions to both Nash and his wife, Frances. These volumes also reflect Perelman and Nash's shared experiences in Hollywood and the literary scene of mid-century America.
