Chien-Shiung Wu (Chinese: 吳健雄; 1912 - 1997) Was A Chinese-American Particle And Experimental Physicist Who Made Significant Contributions In The Field Of Nuclear And Particle Physics. Wu Worked On The Manhattan Project, Where She Helped Develop The Process For Separating Uranium Into Uranium-235 And Uranium-238 Isotopes By Gaseous Diffusion. She Is Best Known For Conducting The Wu Experiment, Which Proved That Parity Is Not Conserved. This Discovery Resulted In Her Colleagues Tsung-Dao Lee And Chen-Ning Yang Winning The 1957 Nobel Prize In Physics, While Wu Herself Was Awarded The Inaugural Wolf Prize In Physics In 1978. Her Expertise In Experimental Physics Evoked Comparisons To Marie Curie. Her Nicknames Include The "First Lady Of Physics", The "Chinese Madame Curie" And The "Queen Of Nuclear Research". In September 1944, Wu Was Contacted By The Manhattan District Engineer, Colonel Kenneth Nichols. Wu Was Frustrated With Her Lack Of Professorships And Volunteered To Help Out In The Project. The Newly Commissioned B Reactor, The First Practical Nuclear Reactor Ever Built, Which Was Located At The Hanford Site Had Run Into An Unexpected Problem, Starting Up And Shutting Down At Regular Intervals. John Archibald Wheeler And Partner Enrico Fermi Suspected That A Fission Product, Xe-135, With A Half-Life Of 9.4 Hours, Was The Culprit, And Might Be A Neutron Poison Or Absorber. Segrè Then Remembered The 1940 Phd Thesis That Wu Had Done For Him At Berkeley On The Radioactive Isotopes Of Xe And Told Fermi To "Ask Ms. Wu". After Fermi Contacted Wu, Segrè Visited Her Dorm Room Together With Nichols And Collected The Typewritten Draft Prepared For The Physical Review. The Suspicions Of Fermi And Wheeler Came True, Wu's Paper Unknowingly Verified That Xe-135 Was Indeed The Culprit For The B Reactor; It Turned Out To Have An Unexpectedly Large Neutron Absorption Cross-Section. Wu Also Used Her Findings In Radioactive Uranium Separation To Build The Standard Model For Producing Enriched Uranium To Fuel The Atomic Bombs At The Oak Ridge, Tennessee Facility As Well As Build Innovative Geiger Counters. Wu, Like Most Involved Physicists In Their Later Years Distanced Herself From The Manhattan Project Due To Its Destructive Outcome And Recommended To The Taiwanese President Chiang Kai-Shek In 1962 To Never Build Nuclear Weapons. In November 1949, Wu Experimented With The Conclusions Of Einstein's Epr Thought Experiment, Which Called Quantum Entanglement "Spooky Action At A Distance". Wu Managed To Be The First To Establish The Phenomenon And Validity Of Entanglement Using Photons Through Observing Angular Correlation. Specifically, The Experiment Carried Out By Wu Was The First Important Confirmation Of Quantum Results Relevant To A Pair Of Entangled Photons As Applicable To The Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (Epr) Paradox. In Her Post-War Research, Wu Continued To Investigate Beta Decay. In 1949, Wu Completely Established Fermi's Theory And Showed How Beta Decay Worked, Especially In Creating Electrons, Neutrinos, And Positrons. At Columbia, Wu Knew The Chinese-Born Theoretical Physicist Tsung-Dao Lee Personally. In The Mid-1950S, Lee And Another Chinese Theoretical Physicist, Chen Ning Yang, Grew To Question A Hypothetical Law Of Elementary Particle Physics, The "Law Of Conservation Of Parity". The Discovery Of Parity Violation Was A Major Contribution To Particle Physics And The Development Of The Standard Model. The Discovery Actually Set The Stage For The Development Of The Model, As The Model Relied On The Idea Of Symmetry Of Particles And Forces And How Particles Can Sometimes Break That Symmetry. In den Warenkorb4to, 5 pp, on five loose and uniform leaves. Very good, on lightly aged paper. The first leaf is headed 'C. W. S. Acc' and is initialled at the foot 'Rt C. Wm. S.' The second is headed 'Sheet (2)', with the rest numbered 3 to 5. It is clear from sheets 2 to 5 that one leaf - what should have been 'Sheet (1)' - is lacking. Provides a fascinating insight into the practicalities of British nineteenth-century exploration, and compliments Shepherd's 'The North-West Peninsula of Iceland: being the journal of a tour in Iceland in the spring and summer of 1862', published by Longmans, Green and Co. in 1867. In April of 1862, with 'certain ornithological inquiries in view', Shepherd travelled from England to Iceland on the Arcturus, 'in the company of my friends Mr. H. M. Upcher, of Sherringham Hall, Norfolk, and Mr. G. G. Fowler, of Gunton Hall, Suffolk'. The accounts include advances 'To Fowler' and 'To Upcher'. The first page carries columns of credits and debits, including £8 0s 1d received 'from the Sale of Ponies'. (Shepherd's book ends with a description of the sale of '[o]ur stud', but does not give the total fetched by the sale.) The other four pages provide itemised entries (around 25 to a page) for the expenditure on the trip. These include £5 to 'Frenchman and Man to row us ashore', £6 'To men who rowed to Surtobrand and took us on board the Metha', £1 to 'Boy with eggs at Holar', £14 to 'Exchange horse that fell into the river at ', 3s to 'Boy for lost Tackle Bag', and, on the group's return, 2s 6d for 'Beer at Adelphi'. The present collection offers a window into the literary world of American poet and humorist Ogden Nash (1902-1971). It is comprised of 239 volumes published between 1886 and 1971, among which are numerous presentation and association copies. All books in the present collection come from the shared personal library of Ogden and Frances Nash. The collection spans poetry, humor, light verse, and literary criticism, and includes a significant number of first and limited editions, often in original bindings or dust jackets. Of particular note are six books inscribed by Nash to his wife, Frances (including five authored by Nash, one of which is in an "Author's Copy" half-leather binding). Included in the collection are 59 works by Nash, three of which feature edits to the text in Nash's hand. Twenty-seven of these Nash publications are Author's copies bound in half-leather. There are an additional 48 volumes bearing inscriptions to Nash from other authors and poets, most notably twelve volumes inscribed by S.J. Perelman. Among the 132 uninscribed volumes included here, 45 bear Ogden Nash's ownership inscription (10 bear the ownership inscription of Frances Nash). The number and range of authorial inscriptions represented in the present collections reflect Nash's wide-ranging literary friendships and professional associations. Notable among these are twelve warmly inscribed titles by humorist S.J. Perelman, whose acerbic wit is on display in a series of affectionate, playful, and sometimes satirical inscriptions to both Nash and his wife, Frances. These volumes also reflect Perelman and Nash's shared experiences in Hollywood and the literary scene of mid-century America. Other highlights include inscriptions from John Betjeman, Christopher Morley, E.C. Bentley, A.P. Herbert, David McCord, William Plumer Fowler, and Holger Lundbergh, among others-each evidencing Nash's influence and the esteem in which he was held across literary and cultural circles in the U.S. and the U.K. Of particular note are the six books personally inscribed by Ogden Nash to his wife, Frances, often composed in his characteristic rhymed style. These inscriptions reflect a deep relationship of tenderness, humor, and enduring partnership. The collection also includes school prize books awarded to Nash in the 1910s, including works by Matthew Arnold, Robert Burns, and Aeschylus, many bound in gilt-tooled leather and bearing formal prize inscriptions from St. George's School. These early items chart the poet's formative years and offer rare provenance tied to his intellectual development. 1399573. Special Collections - Upstairs.…
