Boards rubbed, leather has light scratches and sunning, leather bookplate (Edward Hailsonte), replacement endpapers, first few pp toned, occasional soiling and faint staining else very good condition. Edward Hailstone was a well known book collector, especially of Yorkshire history and culture. Stephen Fovargue's "Vulgar Errors" was intended to be a supplement to Sir Thomas Browne's "Pseudodoxia Epidemica" which refuted some of the common vulgar errors of his age. Excerpts from Fovargue's book: "That Negroes are not Part of the Human Species"; "That Negroes are the Descendants of Cain", and that the Colour of their Skins is that Mark which was set upon Cain, after killing Abel"; "That teaching Boys Bawdy Books, will make them religious Men and good Clergymen", "That Apparitions or Sepctres do exist." "That there is now, or ever was, such a Science as Astrology". FIRST EDITION OF THE AUTHOR'S ONLY BOOK. Very SCARCE.
