Edition originale très rare de cet ouvrage pionnier, l'un des tout premiers sur le sujet avec celui du psychosociologue Gabriel Tarde et celui du criminologue italien Sighele. Il s'agit de l'édition commerciale de la thèse de doctorat en médecine de l'auteur, inspirée par Lacassagne ; elle fait partie de la collection "Documents de criminologie et de me?decine le?gale". Il s'agit donc du seul des trois ouvrages pionniers à avoir été rédigé par un médecin. Cette monographie anticipe l'ouvrage célèbre que Le Bon fera paraître trois ans plus tard. Henry Fournial (1866-1932) entra à l'Ecole du Service de Santé Militaire de Lyon et soutint en 1892 cette thèse sur la psychologie des foules. Il exerça la médecine militaire en grande partie outre-mer (Madagascar, Afrique du Nord) puis devint Médecin-Inspecteur Général.
