Livro com muitas referências a Moçambique que ajuda a compreender muitas das questões que antecederam e se sucederam ao Ultimatum Britânico a Portugal em 1890 e a ocupação efectiva do Continente africano por países europeus na sequência da Conferência de Berlim. O autor foi representante local da African Lakes Corporation Glasgow, uma companhia comercial sediada em Karonga, no actual Malawi. A companhia pertendia tornar-se uma companhia majestática ao serviço da coroa Inglesa, para o que tinha o apoio dos missionários de Livingstónia e a oposição dos missionários de Blantyre e do cônsul Albert George Sidney Hawes, que exerceu estas funções no Lago Niassa, desde 1885 a 1887. No início da sua instalação a empresa foi apoiada pelos Ngonde e os Nyakyusa e enfrentou uma forte oposição dos Swahili, liderados por Mlozi. Assim começou uma guerra provocada por interesses comerciais divergentes dos intervenientes e pela incapacidade da ALC de honrar os seus pagamentos. Fotheringam pediu auxílio ao cônsul inglês em Moçambique (palavra que nesta época designava apenas o norte da colónia portuguesa) mas não conseguiram dominar os inimigos. Book with many references to Mozambique that helps to understand many of the issues that preceded and followed the British Ultimatum to Portugal in 1890 and the actual occupation of the African Continent by European countries following the Berlin Conference. The author was the local representative of the African Lakes Corporation Glasgow, a trading company based in Karonga, in present-day Malawi. The company intended to become a majestic company in the service of the English crown, for which it had the support of the missionaries of Livingstonia and the opposition of the missionaries of Blantyre and of the consul Albert George Sidney Hawes, who held that position in Lake Niassa from 1885 to 1887. At the beginning of its establishment the company was supported by the Ngonde and the Nyakyusa and faced strong opposition from the Swahili, led by Mlozi. Thus began a war sparked by divergent commercial interests of the intervening parties and the inability of the ALC to honour its payments. Fotheringam asked the British consul in Mozambique (a word which at this time designated only the north of the Portuguese colony) for help, but they were unable to subdue their enemies. The war ended in a stalemate that prevented the ALC from achieving its objectives and forced the British government to establish a protectorate, to defeat the Swahili and establish peace.
