Four fine bookplates by Rockwell Kent bookplates to front free eendpaper (echoing the thrid essay, "The Pleasures of Collecting Bookplares"). Boards protected with mylar. Thomas Henry Foster (1875-1951) a meat-paking magnate, was himself a bookplate collector, and, oddly enough, a Shakespeare denier. Thomas Henry Foster was born in Chicago on January 31, 1875. While he was still a child, his family moved to Ottumwa, Iowa, where his father helped establish the Morrell Meat Packing Plant. After going to Parson's College for one year, T. H. as he was known, joined the family business. In 1897, he went to Boston to be assistant manager of the Morrell branch office there. While there, he married Mary Frances Bulger in 1898. After serving the company in New York, in 1901 he returned to Ottumwa to establish the canning department at Morrell, then a new venture. In 1909 he became manager of the Sioux Falls, S.D. plant. He returned to Ottumwa in 1912, and served in a variety of positions, including president of the company from 1921 -- 1944, when he retired. Foster died suddenly at his home on November 14, 1951. Contains all twenty-three beautiful colour illustrations, all printed and engraved by Edmund Evans. Collated complete.This charming collection of ballads is the product of brilliant collaboration between the artists and Edmund Evans, as these celebrated poems are masterfully brought to life with beautiful illustrations. In the publisher's red decorative cloth. Externally, very smart. Minor bumping to head and tail of the spine, and the occasional small sign of rubbing to boards. End papers are bright and clean. Complete in 5 volumes: 4 plus the supplementary volume. Numerous plates, many folding. A good ex-reference library set in the original red cloth gilt. Library plate to front pastedown of each volume, no other library markings apparent. Externally clean with some sun fading and minor scuffing to cloth boards. Vol. 1 backstrip split and reaffixed. Vol. 2 and the supplementary volume rebacked with new endpapers but retaining original backstrips. Text blocks of each volume are tight with no loose or missing pages, all plates present. Internally the volumes are overall clean and unmarked with very occasional small foxing spots and evidence of handling on a few pages of each volume. Overall a clean tight copy of this cornerstone of 19th Century biological thought. [Circa 1870]. Albumen print photograph, carte de visite format, 104 x 64 mm (mount), recto and verso with imprint of 'H. Glenny, Dublin and Melbourne Portrait Rooms, Main Road, Ballarat East, Victoria, Australia', the posthumously published albumen print taken from the original image by Melbourne photographer Thomas Foster Chuck; in fine condition. John Pascoe Fawkner (1792-1869) is regarded, along with John Batman, as one of the founders of Melbourne. Fawkner was the leader of the first group of free settlers in Port Phillip which arrived from Van Diemen's Land in the Enterprize in October 1835. Fawkner also published Melbourne's first newspaper, the Melbourne Advertiser;opened its first hotel; and later served as a member of the Victorian Legislative Council. Several photographic portraits of John Pascoe Fawkner, taken by various Melbourne studios, are known. Another example of the present image in carte de visite format, taken around 1869 by Thomas Foster Chuck, is held in the collection of the State Library of Victoria (H5056/3). The SLV example was published posthumously and is dated 1872. The goldfields photographer Henry Glenny presumably purchased the right to publish Chuck's image some time after Fawkner's death, and would most likely have sold copies of this head-and-shoulders profile portrait from his Ballarat studio as commemorative souvenirs.…
