The Marriage Act of 1835 prohibited the marriage of a widower to his deceased wife's sister, reflecting Victorian anxieties around incest, family purity and the role of the church. Opposition to the Act gradually sprang up and it was repealed with the Deceased Wife's Sister's Marriage Act in 1907.
