In den WarenkorbFirst edition, with the book label of Humphrey Winterton, the major travel collector, on the inside of the custom box. Hubert Foster served with the Royal Engineers in the 1882 Egyptian Expedition, seeing action at Kassassin and Tel-el-Kebir. The two large folding maps show the Mombasa-Victoria Lake Railway and the southern portion of British East Africa (including three insets). They were based on surveys by Vice-Admiral William Owen in 1823-25 and the French captain Charles Guillain in 1848, as well as more recent Admiralty and Royal Engineers cartography. The latter was the only proper survey of the interior available. This copy was number 313 in Maggs Catalogue 1343, From the Abyssinian Expedition to the Mau Mau Insurrection: The African Library of Humphrey Winterton (2003). Large octavo. With 2 large folding maps in end pocket, tables in text. Original blue quarter cloth, rebacked to style, boards, front cover lettered in black. Housed in custom black quarter morocco box. Front free endpaper with laid-down sheet, annotated 3 January 1894, noting that the copy was "forwarded with the compliments of the Secretary of State for War." Stamps and label of Worcester Geographical Society and John Rylands Library on front cover, title page, and final page of text. Map pocket split along upper edge and with closed tear, one map repaired on verso: very good.
