First edition of the Venetian Benedictine monk's vivid account of the historic secret peace meeting of Pope Alexander III and the Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa held at Venice on 24th July 1177 in the presence of the incumbent Doge Sebastiano Ziano (1172-78)and of the resulting military advantages secured for the Republic. The lower panel of the engraved title page shows the Emperor kneeling before the Pope with the Doge standing on his right in the presence of bishops. The upper border incorporates portraits of St Peter and St Mark. Venice was part of the anti-imperial Lombard league of cities that defeated Frederick Barbarossa at Legnano (1176). The Emperor thus had to recognize the supremacy of the Papacy. The imprint is the last recorded from the press of the celebrated Venetian typographer Evangelista Deuchino. A good copy; right blank margin of first 3 leaves strengthened.

Il pannello inferiore del frontespizio inciso mostra l'Imperatore inginocchiato davanti al Papa con il Doge in piedi alla sua destra alla presenza dei vescovi. Il bordo superiore incorpora i ritratti di San Pietro e San Marco. Venezia faceva parte della lega lombarda anti-imperiale delle città che sconfissero Federico Barbarossa a Legnano (1176). L'Imperatore dovette quindi riconoscere la supremazia del Papato. Questa è l'ultima stampa registrata del celebre tipografo veneziano Evangelista Deuchino. Francesco Valesio (illustrator).

A rare example of the competition for the patronage of Saint Nicholas. The Venetian historian Olmo (fl. 1595-1635) wrote this history to question Bari's claim to hold the remains of the saint, as expr…essed by Antonio Beatillo in his Historia della vita . San Nicolò il Magno (Naples, 1620). There are numerous western sources which record the transfer of his remains from Myra to Bari in the year 1087, and the competition between the two cities began then. Olmo's work was written in a period when Venice was struggling to maintain its independence from the papacy, and it has a frankly political cast.
