Da questa domanda innocente come un trabocchetto, prende le mosse il racconto corale imbastito da Mario Fortunato. All'inizio siamo in Calabria, dove un fatto di cronaca, un caso di presunta pedofilia, rimette in moto l'antica amicizia (che a ben vedere non è mai stata soltanto un'amicizia) tra il narratore e un'ex compagna di liceo: Federica, leggendariamente bella e viziata, da sempre in coppia con Lino e madre di due ragazzi. La scena si sposta poi in Tunisia, a Londra, a Roma, in un incessante inseguirsi di chi racconta e di chi è raccontato. Ma in conclusione sarà proprio la vicenda del professor Marco Ferro e del suo giovane allievo Yussef, finita nelle aule dei tribunali e sulle colonne di nera dei quotidiani, a restituire verità alle complicate geometrie sentimentali del narratore, di Federica, dei figli e degli altri personaggi che si stringono in queste pagine. Alla domanda di partenza naturalmente non ci sarà una risposta semplice e univoca, perché la letteratura sa solo domandare.
