Tring, Zoological Museum Tring. 1894. 4to (28.5 x 19.5 cm). 38 pp., two tissue-guarded plates of which one a hand-coloured lithograph by J. Smit. Disbound. = Major (no pun intended) contribution to the knowledge of the lemurs by Charles Immanuel Forsyth Major (1843-1923), a Swiss zoologist and vertebrate palaeontologist of Glaswegian descent. In this paper, two new dwarf maki's are finely illustrated by the famous Dutch artist, Joseph Smit (1836-1929) who also worked for the Zoological Society of London. Perhaps it was this material that convinced Major to join an expedition to Madagascar. He left the same year and stayed until 1896, collecting much new material that lead to the description of many more new lemurs. This paper is extracted from the Novitates Zoologicae, being the very first paper published in that Series, started and funded by Rotschild, and preceded by the Journal's "Note of the editors" with the latter's view on taxonomy and speciation. A very good, clean copy.

Tring, Zoological Museum Tring. 1894. 4to (28.5 x 20.0 cm). 38 pp.; two plates of which one a hand-coloured lithograph. Original printed wrappers. = Rare paper, extracted from Novitates Zoologicae, Volume 1(1) with a beautiful hand-coloured lithograph by the famous 19th-century natural history artist of Dutch descent, Joseph Smit (1836-1923) - by some regarded as even a better illustrator than his compatriot, John Gerrard Keulemans, depicting several lemurs. In this paper, several species are described as new. The author, Charles Immanuel Forsyth Major (1843-1923) was a Scottish-born, Swiss physician, zoologist and explorer, who did much field work in Madagascar himself (see Jenkins and Carleton). He lived most of his life in Zwitserland, which explains why this work was written in German. The wrapper is of the issue. A fine, clean copy. Jenkins, P. D. and M. D. Carleton (2005). Charles Immanuel Forsyth Major's expedition to Madagascar, 1894 to 1896: beginnings of modern systematic study of the island's mammalian fauna. J. Nat. Hist. 39.
(London, Harrison and Sons, 1894). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions", 1894, Vol. 185 - Part I. Pp 15-38 a. 3 lithographed plates. Clean and fine. First printing of this importent paper, relating the discovery of a new family Megaladapidae with the genus and species of the extinct giant lemur of Madagascar. Major collected the bones on his expedition to Madagascar in the years 1894-96."Its tree-grasping attributes probably made Megaladapis vulnerable to changes to the forests of Madagascar. Upon human arrival between 1,500 and 2,000 years ago, the forests of Madagascar were cleared to make farmland. Unable to adapt to these new environmental changes imposed by man and being a tempting target for hunters, Megaladapis became extinct approximately 500 years ago, around the time of European discovery of Madagascar.".
