In the exceptionally lovely publisher's original dust wrapper, price unclipped.In part one of this work, Forsyte details fascinating accounts of attempts that have been made to uncover the true ending of Charles Dickens' final unfinished novel, 'The Mystery of Edwin Drood', a mystery to which there is no generally accepted solution to this day.In the second half of the work, Forsyte provides his own continuation of the story, writing 'in the style of the Master, but from a twentieth century vantage point; the solution he develops is not only logically sound and eminently possible, but attractively embellished with its own inventive and sometimes comic twists and turns'.With an illustrated frontispiece displaying the front wrap of the original monthly parts. Lawrence Hoffman (illustrator). 1st Edition. 8vo., 190pp. Sharp First Edition , First Printing with no other printings listed as called for. Bound in blue cloth with lettering in black. Square, tight and clean throughout with no toning or foxing. A hint of edge-wear and a gentle bump to the crown. Equally attractive unclipped dust-jacket, ($2.95), has mild edge-wear and a bit of soiling. Flap edges mildly toned. Still fresh and bright with no chipping, creases or tears. Though not marked in any way, this came directly from the library of H. Lawrence Hoffman who illustrated the dust-jacket. His son, David Hoffman, the noted documentary filmmaker, has signed a statement with information about his father, the artist, and attesting that the book was from his library. A copy of this is included. A very pretty collectable copy of a scarce book in any condition.

In good condition, on lightly aged and creased paper. Galsworthy writes: 'Dear Evans | Here is the MS. Price £300 [amended from 315] less half your Commission £30. = £285. nett. | Sincerely yours | John Galsworthy'. For such a short message, the manuscript shows signs of indecision: the latter part, from the word 'less', has clearly an addition, and the word 'half' has been inserted with a caret. While the manuscript referred to may well be the second collection of Forsyte Novels, 'A Modern Romance', published by Heinemann's in 1929, Galsworthy's price does seem rather cheap.
