A collection of two cautionary tales by A. von Chamisso and Wilhelm Hauff, handsomely bound in the publisher's original cloth binding. 'The Marvellous History of The Shadowless Man', in the original German 'Peter Schlemihls wundersame Geschichte'. In this story the protagonist Peter Schlemihl sells his shadow to the Devil. The second story featured in this work is 'The Cold Heart' or 'Das kalte Herz', in which the lead Peter Marmot is granted three wishes. Illustrated with With 17 plates to 'The Shadowless Man' and 13 plates to 'The Cold Heart'. Collated complete. With an introduction by Dr. A. S. Rappoport. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally generally smart. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine, with very small tears to the cloth. Patches of rubbing to the front and rear joints, and also to the extremities. Heavy offsetting to the front and rear endpapers. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally clean, with light offsetting to the tissue guards. Very Good. book.

Leather. Zustand: Good. Forster Robson (illustrator). This book contains two works of fiction by A. von Chamisso and Wilhelm Hauff with an introduction Dr A. S. Rappoport. It includes many tipped in colour plates on brown paper with titled tissue guards and further plates and illustrations by Forster Robson Leather bound copy with gilt titles and detail to spine. Book is bound with the original green and gilt cloth cover and spine tipped in. Wilhelm Hauff (November 29, 1802 November 18, 1827) was a German poet and novelist. Considering his brief life, Hauff was an extraordinarily prolific writer. The freshness and originality of his talent, his inventiveness, and his genial humour have won him a high place among the southern German prose writers of the early nineteenth century. Adelbert von Chamisso (January 30, 1781 August 21, 1838), was a German poet and botanist. As a poet Chamisso's reputation stands high, Frauenliebe und -leben (1830) (a cycle of lyrical poems which was set to music by Robert Schumann, by Carl Loewe, and by Franz Paul Lachner) being particularly famous. Also noteworthy are Schloss Boncourt and Salas y Gomez. In estimating his success as a writer, it should be remembered that he was cut off from his native language. He often deals with gloomy or repulsive subjects; and even in his lighter and gayer productions there is an undertone of sadness or of satire. In the lyrical expression of the domestic emotions he displays a fine felicity, and he knew how to treat with true feeling a tale of love or vengeance. Die Löwenbraut may be taken as a sample of his weird and powerful simplicity; and Vergeltung is remarkable for a pitiless precision of treatment. In a half calf binding with cloth covered boards. There is some mild wear tot he extremities including some bumping to the top and bottom of the spine. The front board is detached but present. The binding is tight and firm and the rear cover is firmly attached. Internally the book is generally clean and bright apart from some mild spotting in places. The pages are rough cut as called for. There is an ownership plate for a J. Grenville Hamilton to the front pastedown. Good. book.

Publisher's green cloth with gilt decorations in the original dust jacket and publisher's box. The scarce dust jacket is apparently trimmed at top and bottom edges, not surprising given the tight box fit. Dj is uniformly browned with original pale blue tone visible on the inside flaps. Dj illustration is printed in dark blue. Dj with a long spine fold split at the top edge, now reinforced with archival tape to prevent complete separation. The binding is wonderful, with some attractive oxidation to the gilt/copper decorations on the front panel. Top edges gilt. An occasional spot internally, but generally bright. Tipped in plates are poor quality paper resulting in toning to tissue guards. The rare box is worn at the extremities and split in several places. Cloth. This edition is dated only in the introduction by Rappaport (Sept 1913). Nicely illustrated with tipped in illustrations in color and monotone. Given the production values, scarce in the dust jacket, and even more so in the publisher's box. The binding has been seen with several variations: green cloth with gilt decorations (as here), green cloth with no gilt, and red cloth with gilt decorations (no known priority). Adalbert Von Chamisso (1781-1838) was a German Poet, writer of fiction and botanist. "The Marvellous History of the Shadowless Man" appears to be based on his most famous work Peter Schlemihl which first appeared in Gernal in 1813. Bleiler's "Guide to Supernatural Fiction" calls the original "One of the classics of German Romantic literature.Peter Schlemihl sells his shadow to the Devil in exchange for an ever-filling purse of gold." The first English edition with plates by Cruikshank was published by Whittaker; London, 1823. Wilhelm Hauff was also a German author known for "literary fairytales among the best in world literature, satirical fiction, early detective fiction. A favorite author in Germany, but not very well known in America." (Bleiler, p230). The first English-language collected edition of Hauff's works was published by G. Bell: London, 1890. Originally published in two parts, "The Cold Heart" tells the story of Peter Munk, a charcoal burner in the Black Forest, [who] obtains three wishes from the Glassman, the supernatural being who has power over the woods. He wastes them, gets more from a more terrible demonic being, and falls apart, eventually restoring his life with the help of Glassman. (Bleiler #770m) A later printing of both works in a nice package with tipped in color plates and a nice binding. Scarce in the original publisher's box. A collection of two novels, by the authors Adelbert von Chamisso and Wilhem Hauff. Chamisso was born in France, but his family fled during the French Revolution when was Adelbert was nine, eventually settling in Berlin. This novel, originally titled 'Peter Schlemihls wundersame Geschichte', or 'Peter Schlemihl's Miraculous Story', was written in German in 1814. The novel follows Peter Schlemihl after he sells his shadow to Devil for a bottomless amount of money. Wilhelm Hauff's 1827 'The Cold Heart' (or 'Das Kalte Herz') is a fairy tale about Peter Marmot, who is granted three wishes by a glass-imp. However misfortunes are around the corner as his luck begins to crumble. Hauff was a German novelist and poet who wrote many fairy tales, including 'The Story of Little Muck', 'Little Longnose', and 'The Spessart Inn'. Hauff died when he was only twenty four years old, but was an incredibly prolific writer during his short life. With a frontispiece and nineteen tipped-in plates, all with their tissue guards intact. Some tipped-in plates are lifting but remain secure. An additional ten coloured plates. Collated, complete. Bookplate to the bottom of the front endpaper, 'Ex Libris Piers Gascoigne 15, Malborough Buildings Bath, Avon Tel). Prior owner's pencil inscription to the recto of the front endpaper, 'A D Wardle'. This copy is undated, dated using Copac. In original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, smart. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Minor markings to the spine.
