Maroon cloth with vignette in gilt on the front cover of a man in a parka trying to escape two wolves and title and author in black on the spine with a vignette in black of (supposedly) the Torch of Reason Publishers' logo. Wear to extremities with one corner just barely rubbed through, top and bottom of spine starting to fray, gilt bright, spine slightly faded, all illustrations present and in fine condition, else very good to near fine with no internal markings. Apparently there was a frontispiece portrait of Berry, which is now missing. This is a novel of the Klondike River Valley. Frederick Forrest Berry [1871?-1960] was a native of New Hampshire, who went to Alaska for the 1898 gold rush and stayed through at least 1925, building a successful fox ranch in Homer. Berry also published a monthly socialist magazine in St. Louis called The Torch of Reason, as well as several musical works. In an advertisement for this book in The International Socialist Review, it is described as follows: "A 100,000 word story written in fire and blood, poverty and pain, sweat and tears, out of the very heart and soul of one who has suffered every wrong that is the heritage of those that toil under Capitalism's riot rule." Berry was a sometime correspondent of Eugene V. Debs, who addressed him as "Comrade Berry." Apparently Berry had accused Debs of not promoting his book.…
